37,354 CRMI seats available for FMGs: NMC releases state-wise recognised, approved medical colleges data

New Delhi: As the candidates eagerly await this year's NEET and FMGE examinations, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has released the list of all recognised and approved medical colleges in the country indicating the number of MBBS and CRMI seats available for Foreign Medical Graduates.

The data is published against the backdrop of NMC receiving several requests and representations regarding the number of medical institutes allowed to conduct Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI) for FMGs.

According to the list, a total of 96,977 seats are available for MBBS aspirants and 37,354 seats are open for FMGs to complete their CRMI. These seats are available across 653 medical colleges including 414 recognised and 239 approved institutes.

The state-wise breakup of all recognised and approved medical colleges as well as institutes which are allowed by the NMC to conduct CRMI for foreign medical graduates indicating the number of seats available for FMGs are mentioned below for the dispersal of all concerned candidates and stakeholders.

Medical Colleges in India:

Altogether, 653 Medical colleges are available including 414 recognised and 239 approved institutes in India.

According to the earlier statement issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), there are a total of 655 medical colleges; however, data for 2023-24 may vary on granting of permission by NMC for new Colleges/ increase of seats and on withdrawal of permission for Colleges/seats.

As per the document recently published by the NMC’s UG Medical Education Board Director, Dr Shambhu Sharan Kumar, the maximum number of medical colleges are in the state of Tamil Nadu having 72 institutes (46 recognised, 26 approved). Tamil Nadu also has the highest number of MBBS seats for candidates at present.

The top states list further includes Uttar Pradesh with 67 institutes (36 recognised, 31 approved), Karnataka with 66 institutes (50 recognised, 16 approved) and Maharashtra with 63 medical colleges (47 recognised, 16 approved).

Next are the states of Telangana having 44, Gujarat 36, and West Bengal and Kerala both have 33 medical colleges. 32 medical colleges are in Andhra Pradesh, 30 are in Rajasthan.

The list drops down to 25 medical colleges in Madhya Pradesh, 20 in Bihar, 15 in Odisha, 14 in Chhattisgarh, 13 in Haryana, 12 in Punjab, 10 in Delhi, Assam and Jammu & Kashmir, and 9 in both Jharkhand and Puducherry.

Uttrakhand and Himachal Pradesh both have 8 medical colleges each. While Manipur has 4 medical colleges, Tripura has 2.

There is only 1 medical college in the states/UT of Sikkim, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Goa, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

CRMI seats for FMGs:

As per the NMC list, a total of 37,354 seats are available for Foreign Medical Graduates to complete their CRMI.The maximum seats are in the states of Uttar Pradesh with 4,490 seats, Tamil Nadu with 4430 seats and Telangana with 3,844 seats.

The number falls by a big margin to 2,988 in Karnataka followed by 2,726 in Maharashtra, 2,467 in Gujarat, 2,181 in West Bengal, and 2,113 in Rajasthan.

The list further drops down to 1,758 in Madhya Pradesh, 1,283 in Andhra Pradesh, 1,043 in Bihar, 983 in Chhattisgarh, 927 in Odisha, 903 in Haryana, 747 in Kerala and 723 in Jharkhand.

Jammu & Kashmir comes next on the list with 590 seats, Himachal Pradesh with 549, Uttarakhand with 510, Punjab with 482, Assam with 394, Delhi with 339, Manipur with 286, Dadra and Nagar Haveli with 161 seats at their medical colleges.

Puducherry has 110 seats for FMGs; Manipur and Andaman & Nicobar Islands have 108 seats each followed by Arunachal Pradesh with 54 seats, Tripura with 17 and Goa with 14 seats.

Chandigarh and Sikkim both have 11 CRMI seats each in their medical institutes. Meghalaya comes last on the list with only 4 seats for FMGs.

NEET 2023:

The NEET UG 2023 registrations are likely to begin at the end of February or in the first week of March.

The NEET UG exam for 2023 has been scheduled for 7th May 2023 as per the examination calendar. All the details related to the NEET UG exam including important dates, exam fees, eligibility criteria, availability of seats, the exam scheme, etc. will be released on the official website.

FMGE Screening Test:

The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) Screening Test is scheduled tentatively in June 2023 by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences, NBE.

In terms of Section 13(4B) of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 and Clause 4(2) of the Screening Test Regulation, 2002, an Indian National/Overseas Citizen of India who desires to take admission into MBBS or its equivalent course in a Medical University/Institution outside the country, is required to obtain Eligibility Certificate from the NMC before leaving the country.

It is not permissible for the holder of a primary medical qualification to appear in the FMGE Screening Test without obtaining an Eligibility Certificate from National Medical Commission.

Therefore, the candidates must submit the eligibility certificate to the National Board of Examination (NBE), the conducting body for FMGE, before appearing for the screening test.

The last date for applying is 8th March 2023 till 6 PM. All candidates requiring Eligibility Certificates are requested to apply through National Medical Commission's website https://www.nmc.org.in/ActivitiWebClient/open/studentRaise till the aforementioned deadline then, the NMC portal will be closed.
