IAS Ms Roli Singh appointed as ex-officio member of NMC
New Delhi: The central government has appointed former Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Ms. Roli Singh as the new ex-officio member of the National Medical Commission (NMC), the apex regulator of medical education under the National Medical Commission Act, 2019 on April 12. The confirmation to this effect was recently made by a gazette notification issued by the Union Health Minsitry that Ms. Roli Singh replaces Ms. Arti Ahuja who was the earlier ex-officio member of the NMC.
The government relinquished Ms. Arti Ahuja's position as Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and gave her charge of ex-officio member to Ms. Roli Singh.
In December last year, the government appointed Roli Singh, as the new Additional Secretary of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. She is a 1994 batch IAS officer of the Rajasthan cadre. She was also a resident commissioner in New Delhi before becoming the principal secretary of GAD in Rajasthan.
National Medical Commission (NMC) is an Indian regulatory body of 33 members which regulates medical education and medical professionals including one chairperson, 10 ex officio members, and 22 part-time members, of these at least 60% of the members must be medical practitioners. The ex-officio members include presidents of the four autonomous boards.
Dr. Sunil Kumar (DGHS, MoHFW), Dr. Balram Bhargava (DG,ICMR), Dr. Surekha Kishore (ED, AIIMS, Gorakhpur), Dr. Jagat Ram (Director, PGIMER, Chandigarh), Dr. Rajendra A Badwe, (Director, TMH, Mumbai) were the former ex-officio members of the NMC.
NMC Act 2019 is an Act to provide for a medical education system that improves access to quality and affordable medical education, ensures availability of adequate and high-quality medical professionals in all parts of the country; that promotes equitable and universal healthcare that encourages community health perspective and makes services of medical professionals accessible to all the citizens; that promotes national health goals; that encourages medical professionals to adopt latest medical research in their work and to contribute to research; that has an objective periodic and transparent assessment of medical institutions and facilitates maintenance of a medical register for India and enforces high ethical standards in all aspects of medical services; that is flexible to adapt to changing needs and has an effective grievance redressal mechanism and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.
