NMC calls for Inter-disciplinary Research with AYUSH
New Delhi: While specifying the proposed rules and regulations related to the Postgraduate medical courses across the country, the Postgraduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) of the National Medical Commission (NMC) has also encouraged inter-disciplinary research in the PG medical courses.
The Commission has mentioned that collaborative arrangements with other scientific organizations of excellence and Institutes of Eminence/Excellence conferred by the Union Government may be encouraged with an aim to produce Physician Scientists of highest calibre.
In fact, the PG Board of the Apex Medical Education Regulatory Body has also encouraged Inter-disciplinary research with AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) Department.
NMC mentioned this proposal in the recently released Draft Postgraduate Medical Education Regulations (PGMER) 2023. Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the Draft PGMER 2023 laid down the draft framework as well as the regulations that are to be followed by each of the medical colleges offering PG medical courses across the country.
The Draft Regulations include details about the courses specialities and components of Post-Graduate training, establishment of Post-graduate medical institutes and starting of new PG medical courses, admission and counselling, training of PG medicos, role of universities, details about departments, units, faculties and senior residents, examinations, sanction and penalty, faculty development programme, animal experimentation, collaborative research etc.
In Chapter X of the Draft regulations, along with issues such as the Faculty Development Programme, and Animal Experimentation, the PG Board of the Commission also addressed the matter of Collaborative Research.
Section 10.3 of the Draft Regulations mentioned in this regard, "Impetus may be provided to Research in medical field to produce Physician Scientists of highest caliber by collaborative arrangement with other scientific organizations of excellence as well as Institutes of Eminence/ Excellence conferred by the Government of India. Inter-disciplinary research with AYUSH may be encouraged."
Last year Medical Dialogues reported that in order to promote integration of modern medicine with homeopathy and Indian systems of medicines including Ayurveda, NMC had made it mandatory for all the medical colleges to have a "Department of Integrative Medicine Research".
The decision was taken at the first joint meeting of NMC with the functionaries of the National Commission for Homoeopathy (NCH) and the National Commission for Indian Systems of Medicine (NCISM).
In the Draft PGMER 2023, NMC PG Board has encouraged Inter-disciplinary research with AYUSH. Issuing a Public Notice, NMC released the Draft Regulations on September 06, 2023, and invited comments regarding the same.
