NMC Clarifies on Faculty Promotion concerns
NMC Clarification of Promotion of Medical College Faculties
Jaipur: The National Medical Commission (NMC) recently clarified on the concerns raised by the medical college faculties in Rajasthan regarding their pending promotions which allegedly were delayed due to the completion date of the Basic Course in Medical Education Technology (BCMET).
Addressing the issue, the Apex Medical Education Regulatory Body issued guidelines this month to ensure that eligible candidates receive promotions retrospectively, TOI has reported.
NMC has clarified that if a faculty member completes the BCMET course after the due date of promotion and submits the completion certificate, the concerned candidate should be granted promotion from the due date of promotion.
As per the latest media report by the Times of India, NMC in its March 2025 order stated, "In view of the requirement of BCMET course for promotion, it is clarified if a faculty member completes BCMET course after due date of promotion and submits the completion certificate, then he should be promoted from due date of promotion."
Therefore, those faculties who completed the BCMET course before April 1, 2024, would receive promotions this year and those who would complete it later would be considered for April 1, 2025.
The Apex Medical Body provided the clarification after concerns were raised in this regard by Rajasthan Medical College Teachers Association. The faculties in the medical colleges had objected to the delayed promotions linked to the BCMET course, especially when the course access was limited.
Further pointing out that there was a lack of clear selection criteria for course participation, the faculties noted that the current system could permanently impact career advancement for many members.
Now that the NMC has intervened and offered its clarification, it is expected to settle the dispute in favour of the affected personnel.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that back in 2023, NMC had confirmed that all the Faculty Development Programme (FDP) Workshops conducted under the names of Basic Course in Medical Education (BCME), Revised Basic course workshops (rBCw), or Basic Course in Medical Education Technologies (BCMET) had to be all considered at par.
Issuing a circular in this regard on May 24, 2023, the Director of the UGMEB, Shambhu Sharan Kumar had informed that the Faculty Development Programm (FDP) Workshop conducted under the nomenclature BCME or rBCW or BCMET were all considered at par.
Back then, the Apex Medical Commission had clarified that if a faculty has undergone any of these workshops, it would be considered as completed/attended.
