NMC eyes collaboration with SGPGI to advance competency-based, phygital medical education

SGPGIMS
Lucknow: The National Medical Commission (NMC) is looking forward to collaborating with institutes like Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), Lucknow, to advance competency-based curricula, promote a phygital model of medical education, strengthen clinical research capacity, and foster professionalism, the chairperson of NMC, Dr Abhijat Chandrakant Sheth, recently said.
TOI has reported that during his foundation day address, Dr. Sheth said, "You have set benchmarks in academics, ethics, and professional development. Institutions of your calibre are a role model when it comes to shaping excellence in medical education and research."
He acknowledged that SGPGI is a dream institute for many medical aspirants and also recalled how he longed to gain admission to PGI in the 1990s.
As per the latest media report by the Times of India, Dr. Sheth also expressed his satisfaction over the fact that SGPGI was able to keep its benchmark very high. He added, "Your achievements in interdisciplinary teamwork, impactful research, and development of effective clinical practices continue to inspire medical institutes worldwide."
Executive Registrar Col Varun Bajpai also said that the NMC chief convened a detailed discussion with functionaries on increasing medical seats across super-speciality courses. He told TOI, "We already put up an application for increasing DM and MCh seats, and our proposal was examined in detail. The meeting closed on an optimistic note."
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that earlier this year, Dr. Sheth had announced that NMC was exploring the integration of clinical research into the mainstream medical curriculum. The NMC Chief had mentioned that plans were underway for a collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to strengthen research infrastructure and promote clinical research in medical education.
Recently Dr. Sheth announced that, aiming to promote indigenous innovations in medical devices and medicines, the National Medical Commission (NMC), in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), would soon introduce a PhD programme and bolster clinical research.
