NMC Grants One-year Recognition to Doon Medical College
Dehradun: In a major relief to the MBBS students of Government Doon Medical College, Dehradun, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted one-year recognition to the medical college.
However, the medical college will have to apply fresh in 2024, the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) of NMC mentioned in the letter directed to the dean/principal of the medical institute.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the MBBS students of the 2017 batch of GMC Doon were facing uncertainties regarding their future as their batch did not have the required recognition from the apex medical commission.
The students, who graduated from the medical college in 2023, claimed that the recognition was pending even though NMC inspected the medical college recently in March and the college also completed all the necessary documentation process.
In the absence of recognition from the Apex medical commission, these medical graduates from the 2017 batch were unable to participate in post-graduation entrance examinations such as the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Postgraduate (NEET-PG) examination, Institute of National Importance Combined Entrance Test (INICET), United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), and Professional Linguistic Assessment Board (PLAB) examination.
Apart from this, due to this absence of NMC recognition the medical graduates from the medical college were also unable to seek employment opportunities outside the State of Uttarakhand.
However, in a major relief to the students, the UG Medical Education Board of NMC has finally granted one-year recognition to the medical college. Writing to the head of the institute, the Director of UGMEB, Shambhu Sharan Kumar mentioned, "I am directed to refer to your application for grant of Recognition of MBBS degree 150 seats, awarded by Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Uttarakhand Medical Education University, Dehradun in respect of the students being trained at Doon Medical College, Dehradun, Uttarakhand, and to say that your college was assessed by the Assessors appointed by MARB to conduct virtual assessment during their final MBBS practical examination on 16-17 March, 2023 and physical verification of the facilities on 23.03.2023."
According to the letter, UGMEB considered the assessment report along with the data available on AEBAS and HMIS including CCTV footage and noted certain deficiencies and the same were communicated to the college on 25.04.2023.
Responding to the communication, the Principal of Doon Medical College submitted their reply and an opportunity of the personnel hearing was also given to the college authorities on 18.05.2023.
Referring to this, the UGMEB Director mentioned in the recent letter dated June 07, 2023, "After hearing the college authorities and careful consideration of the facts and compliance, it has been decided by UGMEB that Doon Medical College, Dehradun, Uttarakhand, is granted one year Recognition of MBBS qualification. However, they shall apply afresh for recognition in 2024."
"Accordingly, the approval of the competent authority in UGMEB is hereby conveyed for grant of RECOGNITION FOR ONE YEAR for MBBS degree for 150 seats, granted by Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Uttarakhand Medical Education University, Dehradun in respect of the students being trained at Doon Medical College, Dehradun, Uttarakhand," further added the letter.
"However, the college authorities are advised to apply afresh to UGMEB in 2024 for Recognition, at least 6(six) months prior to the final examination of MBBS Part-II (Practical) along with requisite fee i.e. Rs 3.54 lakhs only," it mentioned.
