MCI relaxes Minimum Qualifications for PG Medical Teachers
New Delhi: In an important development for medical faculties across medical colleges in the country, the Medical Council of India has recently notified new rules on the eligibility as well as promotion of medical college teachers.
Through a recent gazette notification MCI was seen amending Minimum Qualifications for Teachers in Medical Institutions Regulations, 1998 calling the new regulations as “Minimum Qualifications for Teachers in Medical Institutions (Amendment) Regulations, 2017.
With the news amendment MCI has substituted the qualifications of medical teachers indicated in the schedule 1, Clause 6, placing the following qualifications
With this MCI has reduced the number of teaching experience. It is reported that for the purpose of recognition as postgraduate teacher in broad specialties, earlier Schedule 1, Clause 6, required total 8 years with teaching experience with least five years teaching experience as Lecturer or Asst. Professor gained after obtaining postgraduate degree. Now, the number of teaching years as AP has been reduced to 4 years. Simultaenously requirement of 2 research publication in indexed journals has been added.
On similar lines, recognition of PG teacher in Super Specialties required possession of eight years' teaching experience out of which at least five years' teaching experience as Lecturer / Asst. Prof. gained after obtaining the higher speciality degree . Now, the total required teaching experience in this category has been reduced to 6 years with that of AP being reduced to 2 years.
The amendment also lays down the requirement of promotion of medical faculties, which has been laid down as under.
Senior Resident (Super Speciality)
Through a recent gazette notification MCI was seen amending Minimum Qualifications for Teachers in Medical Institutions Regulations, 1998 calling the new regulations as “Minimum Qualifications for Teachers in Medical Institutions (Amendment) Regulations, 2017.
With the news amendment MCI has substituted the qualifications of medical teachers indicated in the schedule 1, Clause 6, placing the following qualifications
“The teachers in a medical college or institution having a total of 8 years teaching experience out of which at least 4 years teaching experience as Assistant Professor with two research publication in indexed journals gained after obtaining postgraduate degree shall be recognized post graduate teacher in broad specialties.
In case of super specialties only those teachers who possess 6 years teaching experience out of which at least 2 years teaching experience as Assistant Professor gained after obtaining the higher specialty degree shall be recognized post graduate teacher.”

Senior Resident | Senior Resident is one who is doing his/her residency in the concerned post graduate subject after obtaining PG degree (MD/MS) and is below 40 years of age. |
