India is at a pivotal juncture in reshaping its healthcare ecosystem, driven by a burgeoning population, technological advancements, and a renewed focus on quality medical training. Over the past decade, the country has witnessed a significant expansion in its medical education infrastructure. As of 2025, there are 766 medical colleges across India, comprising 423 government- run and 343 private institutions. This growth has led to an increase in MBBS seats, totaling approximately 1,18,190, reflecting a 125% rise from 2013-14. While this expansion aims to address the healthcare needs of a growing population, it also brings forth challenges in ensuring consistent quality and accessibility across region.
Medical education in India is undergoing a transformative shift, but not without its hurdles. Despite the expansion of medical colleges and digital resources, students and faculty continue to grapple with key challenges: outdated curricula, limited access to quality textbooks, shortage of trained faculty, and uneven exposure to clinical material across regions.
To address these structural gaps, the National Medical Commission (NMC) introduced the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum—an ambitious reform that reorients medical training around measurable outcomes. It emphasizes early clinical exposure, integrated learning, continuous formative assessment, and the development of core competencies across knowledge, skills, attitudes, and communication.
However translating CBME into everyday academic practice has proven complex. Many institutions continue to operate within legacy systems that are not fully equipped to support competency mapping, interdisciplinary integration, or longitudinal assessment. Faculty often lack access to structured digital tools for evaluating student performance in real-time, while students face inconsistent learning experiences due to fragmented resource availability. These barriers are particularly pronounced in newly established or resource-constrained colleges, where the demand for scalable, outcome-aligned solutions is most urgent.
Amid these challenges, artificial intelligence is emerging as a critical enabler of modern, outcome- oriented medical training. AI-powered education platforms are offering a structured, scalable way to support key learning goals—making it possible to standardize content delivery, personalize learning pathways, and streamline assessment across diverse institutional settings. By auto-generating study notes, mapping competencies, generating topic-wise MCQs to reinforce understanding and support revision in an engaging manner, and offering real-time feedback loops, AI enables both students and faculty to navigate curriculum demands with greater clarity and confidence.

“The CBME curriculum is a significant step forward in shaping clinically competent, ethically grounded, and communication-savvy medical graduates. However, its success depends on how effectively institutions can implement continuous assessments, integrated learning, and competency tracking. Technology-enabled platforms play a vital role in bridging these gaps—by standardizing access to content, facilitating faculty planning, and empowering students to take ownership of their learning journey. AIIMS Guwahati has taken a progressive approach, and this tech-driven mindset is pivotal in contributing to the future of medical education, ensuring that our students are well- prepared to meet the challenges of tomorrow.” said Prof. Ashok Puranik, Executive Director, AIIMS Guwahati
Understanding these challenges, Lippincott Medical Education has emerged as a purpose-built, AI- enabled platform designed to operationalize India’s medical education reforms at scale. Developed in collaboration with academic leaders, it combines a library of over 350 relevant medical eBooks, the majority of which are CBME-aligned, with generative AI tools that support both students and faculty. Learners can access AI-generated summaries, topic-wise MCQs, and competency-linked content to reinforce understanding and support revision. For faculty, the platform offers detailed insights into content usage, performance trends, and progress tracking—while supporting key curriculum modules and integrated learning. With 24/7 access, offline capabilities, and collaborative features, the platform bridges the gap between policy and classroom execution.

“Lippincott Medical Education stands out not just for its vast library of CBME aligned content, but for the intelligence and user-centric design it brings to medical learning. Students benefit from AI generated summaries and probable MCQs mapped to each topic—designed to reinforce understanding and make revision more effective and engaging. Faculty, on the other hand, gain access to actionable analytics, integrated teaching tools, and collaboration features that ease curriculum delivery. From offline access to group-based learning and detailed competency mapping, every feature is crafted to support personalized, equitable, and outcomes-driven medical education in India,” said Ruchi Tushir, Vice President & General Manager, Wolters Kluwer India.
As India redefines the standards of medical education, the focus must now shift from policy formulation to implementation with precision, scale, and inclusivity. Platforms like Lippincott Medical Education demonstrate how technology—when designed with pedagogical intent—can bridge systemic gaps and bring competency-based learning to life. By empowering students with intelligent tools and equipping faculty with actionable insights, AI is not just supporting the CBME vision—it is shaping the next generation of healthcare professionals to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving clinical world. Leading medical institutions in India have partnered with Wolters Kluwer and subscribed to Lippincott Medical Education, the AI-powered eBooks Library, taking a significant step forward in the medical education arena for their students' progress and success. By investing in their students' future, these institutions have embraced the AI-driven world of smarter education and learning methodologies. Their aim is to create not just professionals, but leaders in healthcare for the future.
