Resident doctors leave ICU patients to attend birthday party, Mumbai Hospital demands cancellation of registration

Taking strict action against doctors who had allegedly abandoned intensive care unit (ICU) and trauma intensive care unit (TICU) patients for hours for celebrating a birthday, the V N Desai Municipal General Hospital authorities have urged the Deputy Municipal Commissioner for cancelling their registration.

Even though show-cause notice had been issued against these contractual doctors, who had left seven ICU patients to their fate, they did not respond to the notice.

The matter goes back to September 2022, when these doctors had left seven ICU patients for celebrating the birthday of a colleague at Dr. RN Cooper Hospital. Taking note of the absence of these doctors, the nurses at the hospital had made a note in their diary at 3:40 am on September 17, 2022.

Researchers find artificial pancreas useful for type 2 diabetes patients

Cambridge scientists have successfully trialled an artificial pancreas for use by patients living with type 2 diabetes. The device - powered by an algorithm developed at the University of Cambridge - doubled the amount of time patients were in the target range for glucose compared to standard treatment and halved the time spent experiencing high glucose levels.

Around 415 million people worldwide are estimated to be living with type 2 diabetes, which costs around $760 billion in annual global health expenditure. According to Diabetes UK, in the UK alone, more than 4.9million people have diabetes, of whom 90% have type 2 diabetes, and this is estimated to cost the NHS £10bn per year.

Bombay High Court relief to Johnson & Johnson, company allowed to manufacture, sell baby powder

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday quashed two orders passed by the Maharashtra government revoking the license of Johnson & Johnson company to manufacture, sell and distribute its baby powder products, terming them as “stringent, unreasonable and unfair”.

A division bench of Justices Gautam Patel and S G Dige permitted the company to manufacture, sell and distribute the products.

The bench passed its order on a petition filed by the company challenging two orders of the state government – one dated September 15, 2022 cancelling the license and the second dated September 20, 2022 ordering it to immediately stop the manufacturing and sale of the baby powder product.
