Resident doctors leave ICU patients to attend birthday party, Mumbai hospital demands cancellation of registration
Mumbai: Taking strict action against doctors who had allegedly abandoned intensive care unit (ICU) and trauma intensive care unit (TICU) patients for hours for celebrating a birthday, the V N Desai Municipal General Hospital authorities have urged the Deputy Municipal Commissioner for cancelling their registration.
Even though show-cause notice had been issued against these contractual doctors, who had left seven ICU patients to their fate, they did not respond to the notice.
The matter goes back to September 2022, when these doctors had left seven ICU patients for celebrating the birthday of a colleague at Dr. RN Cooper Hospital. Taking note of the absence of these doctors, the nurses at the hospital had made a note in their diary at 3:40 am on September 17, 2022.
Consequently, the hospital authorities issued a show-cause notice to both the doctors and asked them to explain their act. Since they did not get any response in this regard, the authorities wrote to DMC as well.
“When we learnt about the incident, we issued a show cause notice to these doctors seeking an explanation to their act. However, it has been more than three months but there has been no reply. As such, we wrote to DMC. Moreover doctors being absent from TICU/ MICU before the reliever doctor arrived is on record. There were lapses in the services, mismanagement, and violation of terms on a routine basis,” senior officials from the hospital told Free Press Journal.
In fact the Staff have alleged that those doctors kept leaving the hospital premises and practicing at both places simultaneously. FPJ adds that the hospital officials informed that they had made several complaints about such doctors provided by private firms. They further informed that they have written to the DMC and the Maharashtra Medical Council was now taking strict action against such doctors and revoking their licence.
