GST Council imposes tax: 5% GST on hospital rooms above Rs 5000
Amid Inflation, the all-powerful Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has decided to rationalise rates to remove the inverted duty structure and withdraw GST exemption in case of many items leading to a hike in tax rates.
For the first time in the country, healthcare services have been brought under the GST net as the council has decided to impose 5 per cent GST without input tax credit on hospital rooms above Rs 5000 per day excluding ICUs.

High Court orders dissolution of West Bengal Medical Council
The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday ordered that the present West Bengal Medical Council will stand dissolved from July 31 as it is continuing unlawfully and directed that the election process of the doctors' body, including declaration of results, be concluded within three months from that date.
Petitioner Dr Kunal Saha, a registered medical practitioner in West Bengal and an overseas Indian citizen, submitted that the five-year statutory term of the last elected Medical Council expired on July 15, 2018, and it is currently operating unlawfully.

31-year-old Bengaluru doctor goes missing on Himalayan expedition
A 31-year-old doctor working at Manipal hospital has been reported missing for a long time. Dr S Chandramohan was last reported to have gone to Nepal for a trek to the Himalayas on his own.
A complaint has been filed at the High Grounds station in the city in connection with this. The doctor was a resident of Vasanthanagar and he had been working at the Manipal Hospital located on Sarjapur Road for many years, reports Hans India.

NCDRC holds Nursing Home, doctors guilty for leaving sponge inside patient abdomen, slaps Rs 5 lakh compensation
The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) recently directed a Delhi-based nursing home and its two doctors to pay Rs 5 lakh compensation for leaving a sponge inside the abdomen of the patient while conducting Caesarian delivery (LSCS).
Such a decision was taken by the top consumer court as took note of the Delhi Medical Council order and also the findings of the St. Stephen's Hospital, whose doctors had removed the sponge afterwards.
