India: The annual Stanford–Elsevier “World’s Top 2% Scientists” database has become one of the most widely referenced indicators of global scientific influence. Based on standardized citation metrics derived from the Scopus database, the 2026 edition identifies researchers who rank among the most influential scientists worldwide. India’s presence in the latest rankings is both substantial and encouraging, reflecting the growing depth and breadth of the country’s research ecosystem. India has 6,954 researchers in the 2026 single-year impact list, highlighting the expanding global footprint of Indian science.

India's representation in the Stanford–Elsevier Top 2% Scientists List has more than doubled over the past six years, rising from 3,352 scientists in 2021 to 6,954 in 2026 (Figure 1), reflecting the country's rapidly expanding research ecosystem and growing global scientific influence. The increase has been steady year-on-year, driven by higher research output, stronger international collaborations, improved publication visibility, and broader participation from both established institutions and emerging universities.

The 2026 rankings also demonstrate the diversification of Indian science, with contributions extending beyond traditional powerhouses such as the Indian Institute of Science, IITs, and AIIMS to include a wider range of academic, research, and healthcare institutions. Notably, 1,251 Indian researchers in Clinical Medicine feature in the 2026 database, covering 529 institutions and 56 primary specialities, making it the largest (18%) and most visible scientific domain,

It demonstrates the increasing global impact of Indian medical research and the country's emergence as a major contributor to world science.

A Window into India’s Clinical Research Landscape

At the top of the list are internationally recognized researchers such as Jost Bruno Jonas with a global rank of 231, followed by Chittaranjan Andrade (606), Prashant Kesharwani (2,038), Viswanthan Krishna Mohan (2,053), Rajeev C. Gupta (3549), Shiv Kumar Sarin (3,637), and Anoop Misra (4,448). Their prominence reflects the diversity and maturity of Indian research across many medical specialities notably in ophthalmology, psychiatry, endocrinology, gastroenterology, and internal medicine.

The rankings highlight not merely individual accomplishment but the emergence of research ecosystems capable of producing sustained, globally cited scholarship.

Institutional Excellence Continues to Drive Impact

The dominance of India’s premier academic and research institutions remains evident. AIIMS- New Delhi leads the Clinical Medicine dataset with 60 researchers, followed by PGIMER-Chandigarh (50). Other major contributors include Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (25), L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (20), and the Indian Council of Medical Research (18).

At the national level, the broader Stanford–Elsevier database identifies Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru as the leading Indian institution with 139 scientists in the career-long list, followed by IIT Delhi (114), IIT Kharagpur (97), IIT Madras (81), and IIT Bombay (73).

Encouragingly, excellence is no longer restricted to a handful of legacy institutions. Universities such as Jamia Hamdard, Lovely Professional University, GLA University, Chitkara University, and several emerging private institutions now contribute significantly to India’s research output.

Beyond traditional academic institutions, there is growing contribution of India's private healthcare sector to research and innovation. While university-led institutions continue to dominate overall representation, leading private healthcare organizations including the Apollo Hospitals Group, Fortis Healthcare, Max Healthcare, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, and other corporate hospital networks are increasingly fostering clinician-scientists who contribute to high-impact research. The increasing research output from private healthcare institutions reflects a broader shift in Indian medicine, where excellence is being driven not only by academic centers but also by clinically active hospital systems that are integrating patient care, education, innovation, and research.

Pharmacology Leads the Pack

One of the most striking findings is the overwhelming dominance of Pharmacology & Pharmacy, which contributes 328 scientists, making it the largest specialty in the Clinical Medicine dataset. It is followed by General & Internal Medicine (195), Oncology & Carcinogenesis (70), Ophthalmology & Optometry (67), and Medicinal & Biomolecular Chemistry (55).

This reflects India's strong pharmaceutical ecosystem, well-established drug discovery programs, and growing expertise in translational biomedical sciences. Internal Medicine, however, continues to remain the backbone of clinical research, contributing the greatest breadth of clinically relevant scholarship and healthcare impact.

Looking Beyond Citation Metrics

While the Stanford–Elsevier database provides valuable insights into scientific influence, it is important to recognize its limitations. Citation-based rankings tend to favor fields with larger publication volumes and established international visibility. Many exceptional clinicians, educators, innovators, and healthcare leaders may not be adequately represented through citation metrics alone.

Nevertheless, such analyses remain useful benchmarks. They help institutions evaluate research performance, identify emerging areas of strength, and encourage a culture of inquiry and scholarship.

The Road Ahead

The 2026 Stanford–Elsevier rankings present a compelling narrative: India’s scientific influence continues to grow, and Clinical Medicine remains one of the country’s strongest research domains. The presence of 1,251 Indian clinical medicine scientists among the world’s top-cited researchers reflects the maturation of India’s academic healthcare ecosystem.

The next challenge is not merely increasing publication counts but translating scientific productivity into patient benefit, healthcare innovation, policy impact, and global leadership. Achieving this will require stronger multicenter collaborations, better research funding, enhanced mentorship, protected academic time, and investment in data-driven healthcare research.
