Simple Renal Cysts linked to Ischemic Stroke in Young Adults, suggests study

A study published in the journal of Frontiers in Neurology showed that basic kidney cysts are linked to ischemic stroke in young individuals, illuminating the necessity for increased clinical vigilance.
There is a rising occurrence of ischemic stroke in young individuals, making it a significant cause of death and disability in this age group. Also, it is crucial to recognize the factors that increase the risk of stroke and its underlying causes for better treatment. Thus, this research investigated the potential link between simple renal cysts and the development of ischemic stroke in young adults.
In this study, data was retrospectively gathered from individuals aged 18-50 years who experienced acute ischemic stroke and from controls who matched in age and sex. The data was collected from medical examinations at the Affiliated Changsha Central Hospital, Hengyang Medical School, University of South China, spanning from October 2022 to September 2025. Various potential risk factors such as blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, dyslipidemia, homocysteine, and simple renal cysts were compared between young stroke patients and the control group. A binary logistic regression analysis was performed to pinpoint the risk factors associated with ischemic stroke in young patients.
Simple renal cysts were detected in 52 patients with ischemic stroke (23.7%), when compared to 24 controls (11.0%). After adjustment for potential confounding factors, the presence of renal cysts was associated with nearly threefold higher odds of ischemic stroke (adjusted odds ratio, 2.98; 95% confidence interval, 1.38–6.44).
Elevated systolic blood pressure and fasting blood glucose were also independently associated with stroke, which reinforces the importance of conventional vascular risk factors in younger adults. Interestingly, the association was observed in patients with either a single or multiple renal cysts. However, cyst size, number, and location did not significantly distinguish stroke patients from controls.
The presence of renal cysts was not associated with greater stroke severity, as measured by the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale. Overall, the results suggest that simple renal cysts may indicate a higher risk of ischemic stroke in younger individuals. Possible reasons for this association could involve common factors such as high blood pressure, metabolic irregularities, stiffening of arteries, and malfunction of blood vessels. However, these underlying mechanisms were not specifically analyzed in this research.
