23 TN GMCs begin MD Emergency Medicine course with 85 seats
Chennai: In a major boost to Postgraduate medical education in Tamil Nadu, the State Government has commenced the MD Emergency Medicine course in 85 seats of 23 government medical colleges and hospitals in the State.
These courses were launched by the State Health Minister Ma Subramanian on Wednesday at Government multi-specialty hospital, Omandurar.
After launching the course, the Minister informed that 50% of the seats are filled by the State government and the remaining 50% seats through the All India Quota. He also stated that already 80 seats have been filled and the admission for the remaining 5 seats is currently ongoing.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported the National Medical Commission (NMC) had given its permission for 88 PG medical degree seats and 14 super-speciality seats in the State of Tamil Nadu.
Among these, the State received nod from the Apex medical commission for 85 seats in MD Emergency Medicine in the government medical colleges in the State. In this regard, the State DME data had revealed that the newly added 85 seats in MD Emergency Medicine seats had been added to the institutes including the Madras Medical College, Stanley Medical College, Government Medical College, Sivagangai, Thoothukudi Medical College, Thanjavur Medical College, Chengalpattu Medical College, Government ESI Medical College, Coimbatore and KAP Viswanathan Government Medical College, Tiruchy. All these GMCs have received the NMC nod for five MD Emergency Medicine seats each.
As per the latest media report by The Hindu, State Health Minister Subramanian launched these 85 Emergency Medicine seats in 23 government medical colleges of the State. He further informed that the infrastructure of emergency departments were being improved and new posts were being created and filled with the financial support from the World Bank, which has allotted Rs 100 crore for this purpose.
"Among 85 seats allocated for MD emergency medicine, as many as 80 seats are filled under State and Union government quota. The admission for the remaining 5 seats is in process. Out of 36 government medical colleges and hospitals, the degree will be implemented in 23 medical colleges, and steps will be taken for other colleges too. To develop the structure of medical colleges in the State, the World Bank has assisted Rs 100 crore," Subramanian told DT Next.
The Minister also mentioned that the State was working to further strengthen the infrastructure in all the 36 medical colleges of the State. Pointing out how important it was to strengthen various associated departments, the Health Minister informed that 21 posts of head injury specialists, five posts of plastic surgeons, six vascular surgeons, 10 cardiac surgeons and 49 anaesthetists were newly created and filled.
"It is to meet the expenditure towards infrastructure development and creation of such new posts that the World Bank had spent nearly Rs 100 crore," added the Minister.
Further referring to the Innuyir Kappom-Nammai Kakkum 48 scheme, the Minister added that people who were operated within six hours of being involved in an accident had increased from 23 to 69 from the month of May to present time.
Apart from this, the Minister stated that while 11 new government medical colleges have started operating, the hospital services are yet to commence in those institutes.
"A 700-bed hospital has started functioning in Tiruvallur medical college and a 500-bed hospital at Krishnagiri medical college. Next week, we are starting a 500-bed hospital at Virudhunagar medical college," he mentioned.
