49,772 PG Medical seats Available in 81 Specialities, Maximum in MD General Medicine- NMC seat matrix
New Delhi: Altogether 49,772 postgraduate medical seats are available in 81 specialities at 586 medical institutes across the country for the academic year 2024-2025, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has informed.
The Apex Medical Education Regulatory Body i.e. NMC shared data in this regard in a letter directed to the heads of the medical colleges across the country.
Writing to the Principal/Dean of all the medical colleges/medical institutes of India, the Secretary of NMC, Dr. B Srinivas released the details of the Seat Matrix of all the postgraduate medical courses for the academic year 2024-2025 as on 18.11.2024.
A copy of the letter was also sent to the ACS/PS/Secretaries/Departments of Medical Education in all States/Union Territories, Chairman of NMC, President of PGMEB (Postgraduate Medical Education Board), Director of Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) and PGMEB among others.
State-Wise Details of PG Medical Seats:
As per the data shared by NMC, the State-Wise break-up of available PG Medical Seats are as follows:
The data revealed that among the 49772 postgraduate medical seats, Andhra Pradesh has 3416 PG medical seats, Assam has 684 seats, Bihar has 1175 seats, Chandigarh has 157 seats, Chhattisgarh has 505 seats, Delhi has 1491 seats, Goa has 140 seats, Gujarat has 3022 seats, Haryana has 875 seats, Himachal Pradesh has 355 seats, Jammu and Kashmir has 615 seats, Jharkhand has 268 seats, Karnataka has 6419 seats, Kerala has 1715 seats, Madhya Pradesh has 2395 seats, Maharashtra has 5948 seats, Manipur has 260 seats, Meghalaya has 33 seats, Orissa has 1011 seats, Pondicherry has 819 seats, Punjab has 787 seats, Rajasthan has 2978 seats, Sikkim has 32 seats, Tamil Nadu has 4649 seats, Telangana has 3142 seats, Tripura has 97 seats, Uttar Pradesh has 4381 seats, Uttarakhand has 457 seats, and West Bengal has 1928 seats.
Specialty-wise PG Seat Matrix available for the academic year 2024-2025:
Specialty-wise, these 49772 PG medical seats are available across 81 PG specialities. The details of speciality-wise PG medical seats, as mentioned in the NMC data, are as follows:
There are 396 MD seats for Anatomy, 17 seats for MD Aviation Medicine, 1051 seats for Bio-chemistry, 1 seat for Bio-Physics, 377 for Community Medicine, 10 seats for MD Community Health Administration, 491 for Emergency Medicine, 17 seats for Family Medicine, 738 seats for Forensic Medicine, 5404 seats for General Medicine, 54 seats for Geriatrics, 44 seats for Hospital Administration, 164 seats for Immuno Haematology & Blood Transfusion, 5 seats for Lab Medicine, 2 seats for MD Marine Medicine, 26 seats for Nuclear Medicine, 10 seats for Ob-Gyn, 3476 for Paediatrics, 20 seats for Palliative Medicine, 2885 seats for Pathology, 88 seats for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, 1207 seats for Physiology, 1292 seats for Psychiatry, 13 seats for Pulmonary Medicine, 67 seats for Radiation Oncology, 2636 seats for Radio Diagnosis, 213 seats for Respiratory Medicine, 1405 for Social and Preventive Medicine, 21 seats for Sports Medicine, 15 seats for Transfusion Medicine, 11 seats for Tropical Medicine, 4866 seats for Anaesthesiology, 56 seats for Biochemistry, 1424 seats for Dermatology, Venerology and Leprosy, 2 seats for Immunology and Haematology, 1574 seats for Microbiology, 1336 seats for Pharmacology, 387 seats for Radiotherapy, 868 for Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases, 832 seats for Anatomy, 1263 seats for MD/MS Ophthalmology, and 6 seats for MD Skin and VD.

The total number of PG medical seats also includes several seats in PG Diploma courses including 2 seats for Diploma in Marine Medicine, 4 seats for Anaesthesia, 71 seats for Child Health, 1 seat for Industrial Health, 37 seats for Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, 40 seats for Radio-Diagnosis, 7 seats for Radio Therapy, 103 seats for Anaesthesia, 36 seats for Clinical Pathology, 7 seats for Community Medicine, 30 seats for Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy, 4 seats for Diabetology, 5 seats for Forensic Medicine, 6 seats for Health Administration, 20 seats for Health Education, 6 seats for Hospital Administration, 2 seats for Immuno-Haematology, 2 seats for Leprosy, 4 seats for Microbiology, 98 seats for Ob-Gyn, 76 seats for Ophthalmology, 37 seats for Orthopaedics, 2 seats for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, 31 seats for Psychological Medicine, 17 seats for Public Health, 6 seats for Radiation Medicine, 6 seats for Sports Medicine, 18 seats for Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases, and 10 seats for Postgraduate Diploma in Genetic Counselling.
