NEET PG 2024: 820 Additional Seats Available for PG Medical Admission this year
Mumbai: Bringing good news to the postgraduate medical aspirants, this year, the total number of available postgraduate medical seats across the country have been increased by 820 so far in the central counselling process.
These 820 PG medical seats include the all-India quota seats, deemed and central universities, DNB (Diplomate of National Board) and diploma seats. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), which conducts the admission to the AIQ PG medical seats, released the seat matrix for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Postgraduate (NEET-PG) 2024 examination on Saturday.
Although some of the students claimed that some of the government medical colleges were missing from the all-India quota seat matrix, these are likely to be added soon.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, most of the PG medical seats have been increased in deemed universities, followed by the DNB seats in India. Altogether 494 DNB seats have been increased including 103 seats added in general medicine, 65 seats in orthopaedics, and 48 seats in general surgery departments.
The maximum number of DNB seats i.e. 922 seats are available in general medicine, followed by 620 seats in anaesthesia and 500 seats in general surgery. On the other hand, for the two-year diploma course, more seats are added to the paediatrics branch, followed by anaesthesia and ophthalmology.
Commenting on the increased intake capacity of PG medical seats, Sudha Shenoy, a parent representative told TOI that always there is an increase in the available number seats for admission. However, students are unsure about the issue as 335 seats are missing from the all-India quota compared to 2023.
"Even if there’s an increase this year, it should have been clear by now as there was already a long delay. For Mumbai students, a civic college in Nerul, which recently got the permission to offer PG courses, was missing from the seat matrix released by the MCC," she said.
This year, the entire process of PG medical admission was delayed. Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that even though the NEET PG 2024 exam was held in August and the results were declared on August 23, the choice-filling process for admission to PG medical courses has commenced only now.
As per the seat matrix, released by MCC, a total of 6805 seats are vacant in the DNB course, 6140 seats are vacant in Deemed University, 819 seats are vacant in Internal Quota and 12761 seats are vacant in All India Quota (MD/MS/DIPLOMA).
There are a total of 4 rounds of the counselling process. i.e. round 1, round 2, round 3, and stray vacancy round. The MCC AIQ counselling began on November 7, 2024, with the commencement of Round 1 and will end on January 30, 2025, following the completion of the Online Stray Vacancy Round. As per the recent schedule released by MCC, the state counselling authorities will begin the counselling on November 18, 2024, after the sharing of joined candidates date by the MCC on 28th to 29th November.
After the completion of the NEET PG counselling 2024 choice-filling process, the seat allotment process will then be done from November 18 to 19, 2024, and the result for Round 1 of counselling will be declared on November 20, 2024.
