5,672 MD Anaesthesiology seats as per NMC seat matrix 2026-27, 712 in Karnataka, 668 Maharashtra, 554 UP

New Delhi: A total of 5,672 seats are in the MD Anaesthesiology course for the academic year 2026-27, according to the latest postgraduate seat matrix released by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
Medical Dialogues earlier reported that the NMC released a seat matrix on September 29 showing a total of 63,177 MD, MS, Diploma, DM and MCh medical seats for the academic year 2026-27. However, the NMC clarified that the latest seat matrix does not include seats related to applications received for an increase in the intake of existing PG courses or for the commencement of new PG courses for the academic year 2026-27.
Among the various postgraduate and super speciality courses included in the NMC seat matrix, M.D. Anaesthesiology has 5,672 seats across the States and Union Territories covered in the matrix. This represents the second-highest number of seats among the postgraduate specialities included in the 2026-27 matrix after MD General Medicine.
According to the latest seat matrix, a total of 3 M.D. Anaesthesiology seats are available in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, 361 in Andhra Pradesh, 2 in Arunachal Pradesh, 64 in Assam, 113 in Bihar, 20 in Chandigarh, 48 in Chhattisgarh, 4 in Dadra and Nagar Haveli, 186 in Delhi, and 10 in Goa.
Gujarat has 384 M.D. Anaesthesiology seats, while Haryana has 124, Himachal Pradesh has 40, Jammu and Kashmir has 92, and Jharkhand has 18 seats.
Karnataka has 712 M.D. Anaesthesiology seats, followed by Kerala with 179, Madhya Pradesh with 260, and Maharashtra with 668 seats.
Manipur has 34 M.D. Anaesthesiology seats, while Meghalaya has 4, Mizoram has 2, and Odisha has 112 seats. Puducherry has 73 seats, while Punjab has 99 seats.
Rajasthan has 364 M.D. Anaesthesiology seats, while Sikkim has 4, Tamil Nadu has 515, Telangana has 359, and Tripura has 4 seats.
Uttar Pradesh has 554 M.D. Anaesthesiology seats, while Uttarakhand has 65 and West Bengal has 195 seats.
Highest and lowest seats
As per the list, Karnataka has the highest number of M.D. Anaesthesiology seats at 712, followed by Maharashtra with 668 seats and Uttar Pradesh with 554 seats. Tamil Nadu has 515 seats, while Gujarat has 384 seats.
At the lower end, Arunachal Pradesh has the lowest number of M.D. Anaesthesiology seats with 2 seats, followed by Mizoram with 2 seats. Andaman and Nicobar Islands has 3 seats, while Meghalaya, Sikkim and Tripura have 4 seats each.
