Altogether 58,331 PG medical seats, 8416 granted in 2025-26, NMC releases seat matrix

New Delhi: Due to the National Medical Commission (NMC) approval for the inclusion of additional postgraduate medical seats to the existing seat matrix, a total of 8416 PG medical seats have been added during the academic year 2025-2026.

Therefore, while during the academic year 2024-2025, there were only 49915 PG medical seats available for aspirants, with the addition of these new seats, a total of 58331 PG medical seats are now available during 2025-2026.

The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of NMC provided the breakup of available PG medical seats in a recent notice dated 23.01.2026. It mentioned, "The number of seats available as on 22.01.2026 in various Post-Graduate(Broad Specialty) courses in Medical Colleges/Institutions after the inclusion of seats granted on or before 22.01.2026 under the purview of the National Medical Commission (NMC) for the Academic Year 2025-26 is attached for the information of all stakeholders."

"All Medical Colleges/Institutions are requested to verify and confirm the number of seats displayed against their respective institutions. In case of any discrepancy, the same must be brought to the notice of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), NMC along with supporting documents within 15 days from the date of this notice..," it further mentioned.

"Kindly note that failure to report any discrepancy within the stipulated time may affect the updation of student details on the NMC Admission Portal by the respective college/institution," MARB clarified.

Referring to the MARB Notice, NMC Secretary Dr. Raghav Langer wrote to the Director/Principal/Dean of all medical colleges under NMC and informed them about tentative seats for Post-Graduate courses in Medical Colleges/ Institutions for the Academic Year (AY) 2025-26.

"Kind reference is invited to the Medical Assessment& Rating Board (MARB) Public Notice of even number dated 23-01-2026 (copy enclosed) on the subject mentioned above being self-explanatory inter-alia duly attaching the number of seats available as on 22.01.2026 in various Post-Graduate (Broad Specialty) courses in Medical Colleges/Institutions after the inclusion of seats granted on or before 22.01.2026 under the purview of the National Medical Commission (NMC) for the Academic Year 2025-26 is attached for the information of all stakeholders. All Medical Colleges/Institutions are requested (i) to verify and confirm the number of seats as displayed therein and bring out the discrepancy to the notice of MARB/NMC as per the instructions contained in the said Notice and (ii) take note of the other instructions for compliance," the communication by the NMC Secretary added.

Number of Additional Seats Granted in 2025-2026 (Speciality-wise):

Speciality-wise, a total of 243 seats have been added in MD Bio-Chemistry, 164 seats in MD Emergency Medicine, 6 seats in MD Family Medicine, 12 seats in MD Geriatrics, 13 seats in MD Hospital Administration, 36 seats in MD Immuno Haematology & Blood Transfusion, 7 seats in MD Laboratory Medicine, 14 seats in MD Nuclear Medicine, 5 seats in in MD Ophthalmology, 4 seats in MD Palliative Medicine, 645 seats in MD Pediatrics, 13 seats in MD Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, 286 seats in MD Psychiatry, 78 seats in MD Radiation Oncology, 8 seats in MD Radiology, 164 seats in MD Respiratory Medicine, 9 seats in MD Sports Medicine, 1 seat in MD Transfusion Medicine, 6 seats in MD Orthopaedics, 6 seats in MD Radio Diagnosis, 53 seats in MD/MS Anatomy, 4 seats in MD/MS Ophthalmology, 718 seats in MD Anaesthesiology, 119 seats in MD Anatomy, 291 seats in MD Community Medicine, 432 seats in MD Dermatology Venereology & Leprosy, 113 seats in MD Forensic Medicine/Medicine & Toxicology, 668 seats in MD General Medicine, 242 seats in MD Microbiology, 10 seats in MD-OBG, 430 seats in MD Pathology, 193 seats in MD Pharmacology, 173 seats in MD Physiology, 59 seats in MD Pulmonary Medicine, 544 seats in MD Radio Diagnosis, 2 seats in MS Anatomy, 595 seats in MS Obstetrics & Gynaecology, 400 seats in MS Ophthalmology, 608 seats in MS Orthopaedics, 430 seats in MS Otorhinolarungology, and 610 seats have been added in MS General Surgery.

Number of Additional Seats Granted in 2025-2026 (State-wise):

State-wise, 13 PG seats have been added in Andaman Nicobar Islands, 482 seats in Andhra Pradesh, 23 seats in Arunachal Pradesh, 41 seats in Assam, 233 seats in Bihar, 139 seats in Chhattisgarh, 20 seats in Dadra and Nagar Haveli, 47 seats in Delhi, 651 seats in Gujarat, 213 seats in Haryana, 36 seats in Himachal Pradesh, 120 seats in Jammu & Kashmir, 16 seats in Jharkhand, 1328 seats in Karnataka, 154 seats in Kerala, 509 seats in Madhya Pradesh, 653 seats in Maharashtra, 10 seats in Manipur, 10 seats in Mizoram, 226 seats in Orissa, 78 seats in Pondicherry, 115 seats in Punjab, 440 seats in Rajasthan, 905 seats in Tamil Nadu, 531 seats in Telangana, 16 seats in Tripura, 1034 seats in Uttar Pradesh, 149 seats in Uttarakhand, and 224 seats have been added in West Bengal.
