Bangalore: In an attempt to address the need for orientation of the faculty who are clinicians, in the art of teaching, the Association of National Board of Accredited Institutions (ANBAI) recently organized a Training The Trainers program.

Created by experts from Premiere institutions such as CMC, Apollo etc. the program was inaugurated at Bangalore Baptist Hospital [BBH] on May 14, 2022. It was inaugurated in the presence of Dr.Abhijat Seth, President NBE with the Chief Guest at the occasion being Dr.Minu Bajpai, Executive Director of National Board of Examinations.

Dr.Alexander Thomas, President, AHPI & Dr.Parimala, Director, SIHFW, GOK along with Government officials and senior faculty from all over the country were present at the occasion. Senior clinicians (who would be the faculty) from the District hospitals of Karnataka also attended the programme, confirmed the Association in its Press Release.

Speaking to Medical Dialogues regarding this new course, the president of ANBAI Karnataka Dr.Alexander Thomas said, "ANBAI works very closely with the National Board of Examinations (NBE) and especially in Karnataka we have been able to coordinate with NBE and the Government of Karnataka and we have commenced PG courses in 33 district and taluk Hospitals. This has been very beneficial for the Government hospitals as the quality has gone up, doctors are available round the clock, teachers are motivated and these trainees were very useful during COVID as well."

"Now we have started a Diploma Programme in the smaller hospitals of the state. Although there are senior clinicians who have been practising for many years but they don't have much experience in teaching. So, the students who go there they requested for help and now we have designed this diploma course of two years to help such doctors become good teachers and help them understand how to teach and mentor the students," mentioned Dr. Thomas.

"This is an online course and we have got the best people to do this including faculties from CMC, Apollo etc. They have created this course and its content. This course is once a week and its main purpose is to give those doctors some confidence in teaching. It is not a subjective course but more on general topics of teaching," he clarified.

Such a collaboration of the Government and the Private sector is not new. Private healthcare system helps Karnataka, one of the progressive states of India, in terms of providing medical education and healthcare delivery to its citizens.

Previously, in an attempt to address the issue of shortage of specialist in the state, the first public private model of collaboration between the Government of Karnataka, National Board of Examinations and the Association of National Board of Accredited Institutions was initiated in the premises of Bangalore Baptist Hospital in the year 2016.

Dr.Abhijat Seth, President NBE, Health Minister and officials of MOHFW, GoK represented by Dr.Parimala(presently Director, SIHFW)and Dr. Alexander Thomas, the then President of ANBAI, & Director BBH collaborated together and their discussions resulted in the commencement of Post Graduate DNB courses at 9 government hospitals in the districts of Bagalkot Chitradurga, Dharwad, Kolar, Tumkur, Vijayapura and Bellary along with K.C General and Jayanagar General hospitals in Bangalore in the year 2018. Students, who have enrolled into this course, have executed a bond to serve in the Government hospitals after successful completion of the course.

"As a result of this the issue of shortage of specialist is being very effectively addressed as specialized care is available to the citizens at large on 24/7 basis, benefiting the community," ANBAI mentioned in its release.

"It is noteworthy, that the pass percentage in this stream of PG education is 80% reiterating the high quality of specialized care being offered consequent to the reformistic efforts of both the Government and private healthcare stake holders. Currently 199 students are undergoing postgraduate DNB specialisation in 33 government hospitals," further stated the association.

"This stream of post graduate education provides opportunities for those in government service and others to pursue cost effective high quality post graduate training. Again, under the leadership of Dr.Abhijat Sheth the NBE has introduced the two year diploma course to further enhance the availability of specialists," it added.
