NCISM nod for 31 new ayurveda colleges, over 2600 BAMS seats to be added
New Delhi: The National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) granted Letters of Intent (LOI) or Letters of Permission (LOP) to a total of 31 entities for setting up new ayurveda colleges.
As per the recent report by Pharmabiz, through the LOI or LOP, the NCISM directed the establishment of new Ayurveda medical colleges during the academic year 2025-26. They will also offer undergraduate courses, adding a total of over 2,600 seats to the existing undergraduate (UG) Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) program.
According to information received from NCISM, LOI and LOP were issued to 21 institutions from Maharashtra, four private institutions from Madhya Pradesh and one institution each from Karnataka, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh between June 2025 and November 19, 2025. Also, according to the NCISM data, Maharashtra has the highest number of UG colleges for Ayurveda, followed by Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
In addition, these new approvals will add approximately 2,620 more UG (BAMS) seats to the existing approximately 40,000 UG seats in about 536 institutions for the academic year 2025-26, by November 19, 2025, reports PharmaBiz.
Previously, a total of 536 institutes were approved for undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the Ayurveda system for the academic year 2025-26. Therefore, the new institute is in addition to the already approved institutes.
Meanwhile, according to official data, the Commission had denied permission to 17 Ayurveda colleges during the academic year 2025-26 and allowed one college to permanently withdraw its permission by the beginning of November 2025.
The increase in the number of medical professionals in the AYUSH segment, including Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy, is a step towards the government's efforts to support healthcare services from these medicine systems across the country.
Under the National AYUSH Mission, the Ministry of AYUSH is supporting State and Union Territory (UT) governments in implementing eight structured AYUSH public health programs across the country. These programs will address public health needs, leveraging the capabilities of the AYUSH healthcare system, by providing preventive, care, treatment, and remedial healthcare for a wide range of diseases, including lifestyle-related diseases, either independently or in conjunction with conventional treatments.
