Bihar MBBS Admissions: State silent on implementing 33 per cent reservation for female students
Patna: Even though more than a year has passed since the Bihar State Government had announced its plans for reserving one-third i.e. 33 percent MBBS seats in the State for the female students, the decision in this regard is yet to be implemented.
While the admission process for the All India Quota seats of National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) has already commenced, there is still no word from the concerned Government authorities for reserving one-third MBBS seats for the girls.
Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (BCECEB), which has the responsibility conducting MBBS admission process in the State, is soon going to issue a notification for admission in the 85 per cent State quota seats. However, the State has not yet communicated to the Board regarding the reservation of seats for the female students.
Medical Dialogues had last year reported about the announcement made by the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar regarding reserving one-third i.e. 33.3% seats in medical colleges in the State for women. The Chief Minister had made the suggestion to the effect upon perusal of presentations by the departments of health and science and technology about setting up of medical and engineering universities in the state
In this regard, he ordered the concerned officials to take necessary measures to reserve a minimum of one-third of seats for women at the time of admission in medical courses.
"This would be a unique endeavor and go a long way in ensuring a higher enrolment of girls in these technical institutes of higher learning. Girls will, thus, also feel encouraged to take more interest in pursuing such courses", the Chief Minister had said at that time.
Even though it has been more than a year since the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had made such an announcement, the decision still awaits proper implementation since the State Government has kept mum in this regard.
As per the latest media report by Live Hindustan, the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) of the BCECEB of Bihar has informed that it has not received any communication from the State Government regarding the 33 per cent reservation for girls in the State medical colleges. The Board has already issued notification regarding NEET counselling in the All India Quota seats and soon it will also issue notice for admitting students in the State quota seats.
Therefore, if the State does not issue any order, the female students in Bihar will have to wait further for availing the benefits of reservation and the reservation will not be applicable for the MBBS admission this year i.e. session 2022-2023.
