Breaking: Not NExT, NEET PG 2024 to be held in March 2024, details
New Delhi: In a major update for all the aspirants seeking PG medical admissions next academic year, the National Board of Examinations (NBE) has announced the date for NEET PG 2024. As per the NBE notice, the NEET PG 2024 will tentatively be conducted on 3rd March next year.
Medical Dialogues has been reporting about the speculations surrounding NEET PG 2024. While it was earlier announced by the National Medical Commission (NMC) that the National Exit Test (NExT) would replace the NEET-PG examination in 2024, the exam was deferred by the Apex Medical Commission until further notice.
Later, referring to the possibility of holding the NEET-PG examination in March 2024, the NMC released the draft Post-Graduate Medical Education Regulations (PGMER) 2023 and mentioned that the conduct of examination for admission to PG Broad Specialty Courses (MD/MS) will be "As per NExT Regulation or in case admission is to be based on NEET-PG, then Exam will be conducted in the month of March."
This year, the NEET PG 2023 examination was held on 5th March 2023. Although earlier NBE had clarified that the NEET PG 2023 candidates must complete their mandatory one-year MBBS internship on or before March 31, later it was charged after hundreds of students became unable to fulfil the eligibility criteria of completing the MBBS internship within March 31. Despite the deadline being extended to June 30, 2023, several candidates remained ineligible.
Later, providing relief to the candidates, the Union Health Ministry extended the last date of completion of the MBBS internship to August 11 and the BDS internship to June 30. The ministry said that the decision was taken considering the future of over 13,000 MBBS students who were not eligible for the NEET PG 2023 exam due to the delayed internship.
Recently, considering an application filed by private medical colleges in Tamil Nadu seeking a stray counselling round to fill up the vacant postgraduate medical seats, the Supreme Court issued notice to the authorities.
The top court bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra noted that the matter would be considered after taking note of the number of vacant seats throughout the country. The application filed by the Tamil Nadu Self-Financing Medical Colleges Association (TNSFMCA) has been listed for further hearing on November 24.
Filing the plea, the association informed the top court bench that the Selection Committee, Directorate of Medical Education and Research conducted 4 rounds of PG counselling in Tamil Nadu this year.
Accordingly, the schedule for the Stray Vacancy round was published and it was scheduled to be conducted between 16.10.2023 to 19.10.2023. The association informed the bench that as of 16.10.2023, there were 194 vacancies to be filled in Stray Rounds.
The association sought directions for an extension of time for PG Medical Counselling 2023 to fill up the vacancies that have remained unclaimed/unfilled despite the earlier four rounds of counselling.
