Can Candidates who secured seats in Previous rounds of NEET Counselling Appear in Mop-up? Supreme Court issues notice
New Delhi: The Supreme Court bench recently issued notice to the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) while considering a plea challenging the MCC regulation that barred the medical students who secure admission in the first two rounds of allotment to participate in the mop-up round of counselling of NEET counselling.
In this regard, the Apex Court bench of Justice Surya Kant and J.K Maheshwari further observed that it is unfortunate that even those students securing good marks are forced to study in the private medical colleges and pay hefty fees due to the concerned rule of MCC, adds Onmanorama.
Apart from MCC and NMC, the top court bench has also issued notice to the Central Government and the State Government of Kerala. The matter has been listed for further hearing on February 13, 2023.
The plea was moved by two Kerala-based students who pointed out that even if government seats are available in the mop up round the students securing higher marks cannot get admitted those seats after securing their admission in the private medical colleges in the first two rounds.
Therefore, as per the current rules, if a student secures admission to the private medical college in the first two rounds of UG medical counselling, they have to continue studying there since they are not allowed to avail government seats or course transfer in the mop up round of counselling.
Expressing this 'anomaly' in their petition, the petitioner students challenged the MCC regulations before the top court bench.
As per the latest media report by Onmanorama, even though the Apex Court expressed its sympathy with the petitioner students in this regard, it also referred to the fact that the regulation is a government-issued stipulation.
However, the counselling for the petitioner students, advocate Roy Abraham contended that the college/course transfer via Mop Up round should be allowed if the intention is to secure government seats.
Clarifying that the suggestion has not been raised previously, the top court bench issued notice in the matter and listed it for further hearing on February 13, 2023.
