DCI Directs Dental Colleges To Ensure Provisional Registration Of BDS Students Before Undergoing Internship
Delhi: The Dental Council of India (DCI) has directed dental colleges to ensure the provisional registration of BDS students before undergoing an internship.
As per the notice issued, the Principals of all the dental colleges in the country should allow the BDS students for Compulsory Rotatory Internship only after ensuring the Certificate of provisional registration issued by the concerned State Dental Council, subject to fulfillment of all other necessary requirements.
The Executive Committee of DCI held a meeting on 19.05.2023. The meeting considered various requests received from the student and the colleges regarding the hardship the students face in getting themselves registered in various State Dental Councils without provisional registration due to lack 'of information and also the difficulty faced in filling out the application form for AIIMS PG, NEET, etc., and also before undergoing an internship. As per the eligibility criteria for admission to MDS Course as prescribed in MDS Course Regulations, 2017, one of the requirements is to obtain provisional registration from any State Dental Council. Therefore, for effective and smooth implementation of provisional registration, the Executive Committee, after discussion and deliberations decided, has taken the above decision.
Further, the Executive Committee of the DCI, in its meeting held on 16th/ 17th November 2021, while confirming the recommendations of the UG Sub-committee held on 2nd/3rd November 2021 at item No.5(132)S, took up the matter with regard to the provisional registration for eligibility to the MDS Course as per DCI MDS Course Regulations 2017.
As per the provision of MDS Course Regulations 2017 for admission to the MDS Course, the candidate must possess a recognized degree of Bachelor in Dental Surgery awarded by a University or institute in India and registered with the State Dental Council and has obtained provisional or permanent registration and has undergone compulsory' rotatory internship of a year in an approved/recognized dental college. The Council noted that only the State Dental Council, such as Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Karnataka, have started the provisional registration regarding those who have passed their BDS Course and doing their internship.
Accordingly, the Executive Committee directed all the State Dental Councils to start provisional registration for student who has passed their final BDS and issue provisional registration for the purpose of allowing the BDS graduates to practice clinical dentistry in the college during the internship and to appear for AIIMS PG, NEET PG Exam /pursuing their career options.
All the State Dental Councils, subject to fulfillment of all necessary requirements, advised as under –
1. To register the BDS students who have already started/completed their internship (before the issuance of this circular) without provisional registration, relaxing the requirement of provisional registration as a one-time measure, not to be quoted as a precedent.
2. To issue the provisional registration clearly mentioning the purpose of issuing the Certificate and its validity over a time period.
3. To register the students having provisional registration of different States.
In case of transfer of internship –
1. If both the dental colleges are in the same state, then the provisional registration shall be done by the concerned State Dental Council.
2. If the concerned dental colleges are in different states, then the provisional registration shall be done by the State Dental Council from where the student will undergo the internship.
