Do not Allot FMGs in AIIMS for Internship: NMC tells State Medical Councils
New Delhi: Clearing the doubts, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has asked the State Medical Councils not to allot any Foreign Medical Graduates to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for internship since the premiere medical institute does not come under the purview of NMC.
Issuing a public notice in this regard on April 28, NMC Undergraduate Medical Education Board added, "...all State Medical Councils are requested NOT to allot any Foreign Medical Graduates in AIIMS for conduct of internship in India."
Earlier this year, NMC released the list of all recognised and approved medical colleges in the country indicating the number of MBBS and CRMI seats available for FMGs.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that NMC had published the data after receiving several requests and representations regarding the number of medical institutes allowed to conduct Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI) for FMGs.
According to the list, a total of 96,977 seats are available for MBBS aspirants and 37,354 seats are open for FMGs to complete their CRMI. These seats are available across 653 medical colleges including 414 recognised and 239 approved institutes.
However, the State Medical Councils had submitted representations to the Commission regarding the inclusion of AIIMS in the said list of allotments to FMGs.
Addressing the issue, NMC UG Medical Education Board mentioned in the notice,
"In reference to National Medical Commission's Public Notice dated 22.02.2023 wherein the updated state-wise list of recognized and approved Medical Colleges/ Institutes along with number of FMG seats for Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI), was published, it is hereby informed the various representations/ queries have been received in the Commission regarding inclusion of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the said list for allotment to FMGs for their twelve month internships in India."
Explaining that AIIMS does not come under the purview of NMC and therefore it has been excluded from the list, the notice further mentioned,
"The above matter has been deliberated in the Commission and it has been decided that All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) do not come under the purview of National Medical Commission. Hence, AIIMS shall be excluded from the list published by the Commission vide above referred Public Notice."
"In view of the above, all State Medical Councils are requested NOT to allot any Foreign Medical Graduates in AIIMS for conduct of internship in India," the notice further mentioned.
