Doctors' body seeks NMC intervention over alleged stipend non-payment at SLIMS Puducherry
New Delhi: A doctors' body has written to the Chairperson of the National Medical Commission (NMC) requesting urgent intervention in the alleged non-payment of stipends to MBBS interns and resident doctors at Sri Lakshmi Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences (SLIMS), Puducherry.
The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA), in the letter dated August 4, 2026 said it had received representations along with supporting documents that the Postgraduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) of National Medical Commission, has already issued a Show Cause Notice dated 28.07.2026 to the institution concerning these allegations.
The association stated that the allegations, if established, reflect serious non-compliance with the regulatory framework governing medical education and resident welfare.
"It is also alleged that affected students fear retaliation for raising these concerns. Such apprehensions, if left unaddressed, may discourage medical trainees from reporting genuine grievances," FAIMA wrote in the letter.
Highlighting that medical interns and resident doctors are the backbone of the healthcare system, the association said timely payment of stipends is not only a regulatory obligation but also a matter of dignity, financial security, and professional well-being. Any prolonged delay adversely affects patient care, medical education, and the morale of young doctors.
Therefore, it requested the Apex Medical Regulatory body to conduct a fair, transparent, and time-bound inquiry into the allegations raised against SLIMS, Puducherry, ensure immediate compliance with all applicable NMC regulations concerning payment of stipends if violations are established, direct the institution to release all eligible pending stipend arrears without further delay, if found due, ensure that no intern or postgraduate resident doctor faces academic or administrative victimization for raising legitimate grievances and appropriate regulatory action, as deemed fit under the NMC Act and relevant regulations, in the event of confirmed non-compliance.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of medical students, interns and resident doctors across the country, FAIMA requested the NMC to intervene and resolve the matter expeditiously in the interest of justice, transparency and the integrity of medical education.
