New Delhi: Despite a Supreme Court order to immediately transfer around 151 vacant Tamil Nadu In-Service Super Speciality seats to the All India Quota, a doctors' body has alleged that the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) failed to act on the matter, leaving aspirants anxious and uncertain about when the NEET SS 2025 counselling will begin.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that around 7,000 aspirants across the country were likely to get relief as the NEET SS Counselling 2025 was expected to commence on June 1, 2026. MCC was supposed to start the counselling from Monday i.e June 1, 2026, following official discussions between the FAIMA delegation and concerned authorities. However, the committee is reported to have failed to begin the counselling process on the promised date.

In a strongly worded letter on June 3, 2026, addressed to the MCC and Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) expressed "outrage and profound disappointment" over the alleged delay in implementing the apex court’s May 29, 2026 order in WP(C) No. 415/2026.

According to the association, the Supreme Court had directed the immediate reversion of around 151 vacant Tamil Nadu In-Service Super Speciality seats for allocation through the All India Quota. However, the doctors’ body alleged that MCC has shown “absolute inaction” despite the court’s clear directive.

FAIMA stated that Tamil Nadu had allocated 219 Super Speciality seats under the In-Service quota for the 2025-26 academic session. However, only around 100 candidates reportedly qualified and just 68 joined after counselling, leaving 151 seats vacant.

Calling the vacant seats a “colossal waste of resources,” the association said the unused seats represent missed opportunities for aspiring doctors and could have helped strengthen the country’s healthcare system.

The association further alleged that repeated procedural delays, bureaucratic apathy, and now, outright contempt for a Supreme Court order, have resulted in the systematic loss of vital training positions that could have benefited thousands of patients nationwide.

"Ignoring the Court’s order is not only a violation of judicial authority but also a direct assault on the rights of deserving medical professionals and the health security of India. Seats are not mere numbers—they are public assets created at significant expense, meant to serve the nation’s health. Allowing these seats to rot unused due to administrative laziness and insubordination is a betrayal of taxpayer funds, a mockery of justice, and an abdication of responsibility," the association said.

FAIMA demanded that MCC immediately surrender all 151 Tamil Nadu In-Service Super Speciality seats for inclusion in the All India Quota without any further delay, excuses, or procedural hindrance, strictly and immediately enforce the Supreme Court’s order, prioritize these seats in Round-II counselling and ensure their swift allocation, a clear, transparent notifications to prevent further wastage and to uphold the sanctity of the Court’s directive and take all necessary measures to eliminate procedural delays, bureaucratic red tape, and ensure full compliance with the Court’s ruling.

Commenting on this, Dr Jaideep Kumar Choudhary, FAIMA Chairman, told Medical Dialogues, "MCC has not clarified its stand to start the counseling of NEET-SS 2025 despite the supreme court order to revert Tamil Nadu Super speciality seats to the All India Quota on 29.05.2026 due to which the SS aspirants are in deep trauma even after the SC order. FAIMA has written to the MCC many times and even after this order, FAIMA has given a letter to the Director, MCC to provide dates to conduct the further rounds of counseling without any delay. There are thousands of aspirants who are distressed and have nothing to do as of now. Most of the SS aspirants had left their current jobs after the 1st round of counselling of NEET-SS 2025 who are now jobless and are not able to think about what to do next.. So, we are urging the MCC administrative body to look into this matter with immediate effects."

In April 2026, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) extended the choice filling process for Round 2 of NEET SS Counselling 2025 until further notice, citing an ongoing legal matter in the Supreme Court of India. MCC took this decision in light of the case Tamilvani & Ors. vs State of Tamil Nadu, which concerns the reversion of in-service seats from Tamil Nadu to the All India Quota pool, prompting authorities to delay the counselling schedule. As a result, the counselling process for superspeciality medical admissions came to a standstill.

The results for the NEET-SS examination were announced in January 2026, 1st round of counselling by MCC has been completed, and a few students have joined their allotted institute. But due to the delay in the 2nd round of counselling, the majority of the candidates having applied for upgradation of their seats can not join the prior allotted institute.
