GMC Saran, Samastipur to come up in Bihar, MBBS admissions from next year
Patna: Bringing good news to the medical aspirants in the State, the number of government medical colleges in Bihar is going to increase soon as the proposed new medical colleges in Saran and Samastipur are expected to get ready by the end of 2022.
The confirmation regarding this came from the Additional Secretary of the State Health Department, Kaushal Kishore who informed TOI that 60 % of the construction work has already been completed.
Both of these upcoming medical institutes will have 500 beds each in the hospital and a total number of 250 MBBS seats, he confirmed.
As per the data provided by the Minister of State of the Union Health Ministry, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar before the Parliament this year, there are a total number of 20 medical colleges in Bihar with an intake capacity for 2540 MBBS seats. Among these, there are altogether 12 Government medical colleges offering 1490 seats for MBBS admission. Another 1050 MBBS seats are available in the 8 private medical colleges in the State.

With these two new medical colleges in Saran and Samastipur, the total number of GMCs in the State will go up to 14. The GMCs at Saran and Samastipur are coming up under the phase I of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya had informed the Parliament about setting up of new medical colleges under the Centrally Sponspored Scheme for "Establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals".
Confirming establishment of 8 new GMCs under the Central scheme, the Union Health Minister had said at that time, "Under Phase I of the Scheme, three medical colleges at -Purnia, Saran and Samastipur districts of Bihar were sanctioned at a cost of Rs. 189 crore each. In Phase II of the Scheme, five medical colleges at - Sitamarhi, Jaanjharpur, Siwan, Buxar, and Jamui districts of Bihar were sanctioned at a unit cost of Rs. 250 crore each. The entire Central Share for Phase I and Phase II colleges has been released to the State Government in respect of the colleges sanctioned."

Earlier, State health minister Mangal Pandey had confirmed that these two medical colleges in Saran and Samastipur would be ready by November and December of 2022 respectively.
