Gujarat Budget offers 3 new Medical Colleges, 1 medical varsity for the State
Ahmedabad: The last Gujarat Budget before the assembly elections brought good news to the medical fraternity as the Government has decided to build three new medical colleges and a medical university.
These new medical colleges will be started in Botad, Khambhali and Veraval towns of Saurashtra region, adds PTI.
Further, the Government has decided to spend another Rs 106 crore under the Master Plan Project for modernizing the already existing medical colleges.
As per the data provided by the MoS Health Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar last year, there are a total number of 31 medical colleges in Gujarat with an intake capacity of 5700 MBBS seats. Among these, 18 medical colleges are run by the Government and 13 medical colleges are run by Private management.
Apart from this, a total number of 2127 PG medical seats are also operative in the state.
As per the latest media report by the New Indian Express, the state's decision to build new medical colleges should be read together with the recent development concerning the Ukraine-Russia war, which showed how many Indian students go to foreign countries for pursuing medical education. Soon after the Government started being questioned for this, it announced the opening of three new medical colleges in the State.
Further, the Finance Minister has also announced setting up a medical education in Gujarat in an attempt to promote medical education and research.
The State has also decided to include a provision of Rs 106 crore under the Master Plan Project in order to develop ultra-modern facilities in the Government Medical colleges at Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Surat and to modernize them.
