IIT Bhubaneswar, Institute of Life Sciences collaborate for technical education, to focus on developing tuberculosis prevention vaccine
Bhubaneswar: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar has signed an MoU with the Institute of Life Sciences (ILS) to explore opportunities of collaboration in technical education and research, with a special focus on developing a vaccine for tuberculosis prevention.
The collaboration intends to bring about excellence in technical education, particularly in the fields of biological sciences, molecular biology and microbiology, the officials said.
The association will enhance the ecosystem for research in the fields of various life sciences, which would help in saving human lives from various diseases and natural ailments, Director of IIT-Bhubaneswar, Shreepad Karmalkar, said.
The special focus towards developing the vaccine for tuberculosis prevention will boost the efforts being made towards this end, ILS Director Debasis Dash said.

"This MoU between the two premier institutions of India will not only bring transformation in research in the field of biological sciences, but also help Odisha in creating a benchmark in this domain in future," Dash said.

Institute of Life Sciences (ILS) was established in the year 1989 as an autonomous institute under the administrative control of Govt. of Odisha. In 2002, it was taken over by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India. The Prime Minister of India Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee dedicated the institute to the nation in July 2003. The research activity of ILS focuses on basic, applied, translational and interdisciplinary focus areas.
Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar is established by the Government of India in 2008 under The Institutes of Technology Act 1961 with Amendments up to 2012. The Act was passed in the Lok Sabha on 24th March 2011 and by the Rajya Sabha on 30 April 2012. IIT Bhubaneswar became an Institute of National Importance from 29th June 2012 with notification of Amendment in the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 by the Ministry of Education, (Department of Higher Education) Government of India published in the Gazette of India dated 2nd July 2012 .
