MBBS, PG Medical admissions at 3 Private Medical Colleges cancelled by NMC
Warangal: Medical Education in Telangana has faced a sudden downfall as the National Medical Commission (NMC) has recently cancelled MBBS and PG medical admissions in three private medical colleges in the State resulting in a huge decrease in the total number of seats.
While MBBS and postgraduate courses has been cancelled at MNR Medical College and Hospital, Sangareddy, in the case of Mahavir Institute of Medical Sciences, Vikarabad, the Apex Medical Regulator has cancelled the PG medical seats.
Besides the recognition for MBBS admission, MNR medical college lost PG seats in specialist courses like pathology, anatomy, ophthalmology and biochemistry. PG courses such as MD general medicine, paediatrics, and orthopaedics has been cancelled at Mahavir Institute.
Apart from this, TRR Institute of Medical Sciences, Patancheru has lost its letter of permission for the first renewal and second batch of admission, reports Deccan Chronicle.
Such a decision has been taken by NMC on the basis of the recently conducted country-wide surprise inspections. Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the Union Health Ministry had carried out a surprise inspection at 12 private medical colleges in five different cities and shut down one of them after reportedly finding that they were allegedly not conforming to prescribed minimum standard requirements.
Monitored by the Union Health Minister himself, these surprise inspections were initiated in January, 2022 and a team 3-5 doctors, formed by the Ministry had visited colleges in Dhule, Udaipur, Jabalpur, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and other states in the country.
In case of Telangana, the team had conducted inspections on March 30, 2022, at Mahavir Institute of Medical Sciences, Vikarabad, MNR Medical College & Hospital, Sangareddy, and TRR Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad.
Reportedly, the NMC inspections mainly stressed upon the patient inflow in the teaching hospitals attached to the medical colleges.
As per the latest media report by Deccan Chronicle, although NMC did not act on the inspection reports before admission into UG and PG courses were being conducted until May first week, it cancelled the admissions on May 19 after the process was completed.
In fact, the daily further adds that apart from admitting students, these colleges had also sent the final list of admitted students in the second week of May. Referring to the decision of cancellation issued on May 19, an official in MNR College told Deccan Chronicle, "We are going for an appeal against the NMC decision because otherwise the students will suffer." He further explained that as the admissions had been made when the existing permission was operating, the admitted students should not suffer.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that MoS Health Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar had informed in the parliament that Telangana has a total number of 34 medical colleges with an intake capacity of 5340 seats. Among these 23 medical colleges with an intake of 3550 seats are run by the Private management. Further, as per the information provided by Dr. Pawar last year, Telangana had a total number of 2237 PG medical seats including 1184 seats in Private institutes.
