MBBS, PG Medical Education Get Costlier in Gujarat

Ahmedabad: Medical education in Gujarat has become costlier as the Fee Regulatory Committee (FRC) has announced a fee hike of 7 to 12 percent for the medical colleges in the State. The revised fee structure, announced by the FRC, will apply for the next two years, and it will cover 19 MBBS and 10 MD-MS medical colleges across Gujarat.
Due to the fee increase, the cost of medical education will increase around Rs 1 lakh for government quota seats and up to Rs 1.5 lakh for the management quota seats. The fee for MD-MS courses under the government quota has increased by around Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh per year. For the management quota, the hike is even higher- between Rs 3 lakh and Rs 4 lakh annually.

The govt quota PG seat at NHL Medical College, which previously cost Rs 7.93 lakh annually, now costs Rs 8.88 lakh. At the higher end, the govt quota fee at H M Patel Institute increased from Rs 20.28 lakh to Rs 21 lakh. The fee for management quota seats at NHL rose from Rs 26.94 lakh to Rs 30.17 lakh, while the most expensive management quota seat is now at Surat Municipal Corporation Medical College, which increased from Rs 37.15 lakh to Rs 41.61 lakh - a spike of Rs 4.46 lakh, reports TOI.
As per the latest media report by Mirror, the lowest annual fee for the management quota seats is Rs 18.27 lakh at Gujarat Cancer Society Medical College. Meanwhile, the highest annual fee for the management quota seats is charged by Narendra Modi Medical College and NHL Medical College. The fee for the management quota seats at these institutes is Rs 25.63 lakh, and it will increase further to Rs 28.85 lakh and Rs 28.70 lakh respectively by 2026-2027.
Usually, the fee panel reviews the fee structure of the medical colleges every three years. While the 2018 revision spanned three years, there were minimal changes in 2021, considering the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year, the fee revision was limited to a one-year cycle.
Regarding this year's fee hike, the committee members told the Daily that the approval for the fee hike was granted after a detailed audit of the college's financials, including income and expenditure. Mirror has reported that 7 per cent of the total hike accounts for inflation and 5 per cent accounts for administrative expenses.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that last year, GMERS had increased the MBBS annual fees across all its colleges in the State by up to 87 percent on June 28. The fees for the State and all-India quota seats were increased from 3.3 lakh per annum to Rs 5.5 lakh per annum- around 66 percent.
For the management quota seats, fees were increased by 87%. While previously, the students had to pay around Rs 9.075 lakh for these management quota seats, now the fees have been increased to Rs 17 lakh.
The course fee for the NRI quota MBBS seats had also been increased. From $ 22,000 per annum to $25,000 per annum- the course fee for the NRI quota seats had increased by 13%.
However, the decision sparked controversies and was criticised by the students and the members of the medical fraternities. After facing severe backlash over whooping 87 percent fee hike for MBBS courses at GMERS institutions, the Gujarat government partially rolled back the increase in the fee structure.
