112 NRI MBBS seats vacant in Andhra- NMC to examine admission deadline extension, NEET percentile reduction

Vijayawada: Taking cognisance of the vacant MBBS seats under the NRI quota in Andhra Pradesh, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has revealed that it will examine the State Government's request to extend the deadline for MBBS admissions for the academic year 2026-2027 and reduce the NEET qualifying percentile, Deccan Chronicle has reported.
NMC's decision comes after Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS), acting on the State Government's directions, sought a further 15 days of time to complete the admission process and fill up the vacant 112 MBBS seats under the NRI quota, which remain unfilled even after the stray vacancy round of NEET UG counselling.
This year, the deadline for completing MBBS and BDS admissions is October 26. In accordance with the prescribed guidelines, the University conducted the first, second, and third (mop-up) rounds of counselling, followed by the stray vacancy round. The stray vacancy round was completed on October 23.

Even after this, 112 NRI-quota MBBS seats remained unfilled. These seats include 95 seats belonging to the private medical colleges. The remaining vacant seats include nine seats at the Paderu Government Medical College and eight at the Padmavathi Medical College.
Recently, the registrar of NTRUHS wrote to the NMC Chairperson as well as the Director General of Health Services, seeking an extension of time for admissions and a reduction in the NEET UG 2026 qualifying percentile.
The University has requested the Apex Medical Commission to relax the NEET-UG qualifying percentile to fill up the remaining seats. Further, the University sought an extension of the admission deadline by 15 days to complete the counselling and admissions process.
Writing to NMC, NTRUHS referred to a separate request by the Secretary-General of the Andhra Pradesh Private Medical and Dental Colleges Managements Association, who also has sought an extension of the MBBS admission deadline till November 20, 2026.
According to a Deccan Chronicle report, NMC has indicated that it will examine the letter of the University after the existing MBBS admission deadline expires on October 26, 2026. Consequently, NMC will take an appropriate decision.
