How is it possible? Doctors question NEET 2024 results as 8 candidates from same centre score 720 marks, many get 718-719 Marks
New Delhi: The results of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2024 examination have come as a shock to many as altogether 67 candidates have secured the All India Rank 1 in the examination. Moreover, soon after the reports of a large number of students securing full marks i.e. 720 marks in the exam came to light, the allegations of the NEET paper leak scam started circulating on the social media platforms.
The scorecard of some candidates securing 718 or 719 marks started circulating as well. Referring to the marking scheme of the undergraduate medical entrance exam (NEET), many have started questioning how these students secured 718 or 719 marks.
According to the NEET marking scheme, every candidate is awarded 4 marks for every right answer and 1 mark is deducted for every wrong answer. Therefore, after the full marks i.e. 720, the candidates can only secure 716 marks if they leave one answer unattempted. Similarly, a candidate would get 715 marks if he/she gives one wrong answer.
Apart from this, several users on social media also shared screenshots of the NEET merit list, released by NTA, to highlight that altogether 8 students from the same centre secured 720 marks in the examination.
NEET-UG is the qualifying entrance exam for admission to Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery (BSMS), Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS), and Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS) and BSc (H) Nursing courses.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that NTA released the NEET scorecard yesterday i.e. on June 4, 2024. A record 24.06 lakh candidates had registered for NEET this year. The passing percentage is almost the same as last year at 56.2 percent.
NEET Merit List Raises Allegations of Scam:
After the publication of the NEET results, the scorecards of candidates securing 718 and 719 marks in the exam started circulating on the social media platforms.
Referring to this, an user wrote on X (formerly Twitter), "Is it possible to have 718 Marks in #NEETUG ? HOWWW? (Rank 69)".
Another X user wrote, "Candidates have scored.. 718/720 719/720 How it can be justified?? Please don't play with emotions and future of students @NTA_Exams."
Raising the issue, the X handle of 'Indian Doctor' questioned, "Candidates are scoring ★718 /720 ★719/720 Can this possible with negative marking criteria of @NTA_Exams ? Any clarification?"
Similarly, the issue of possibly 8 candidates securing 720 marks in the exam also came to light. Sharing the merit list, the X handle of 'Indian Doctor' wrote, "Another Suspicious irregularity* "8 Candidates with same sequence starting with 2307010168, 333, 403, 460, 178, 037, 186, 198”_ - How it is possible from 25 Lakh students, 8 students topped from same centre?"
Addressing the Bihar police, which brought the NEET paper leak scam into light, 'Indian Doctor' further mentioned, "Dear @dm_patna & @PatnaPolice24x7 This time 67 candidates are scoring 720/720, in which 8 from same center! It was because of your hard work, that the Country first came to know about #NEET paper leak. Now everyone's future is in your hands Please help.."
Referring to the NEET Merit list and highlighting the roll number of 8 candidates from the same centre, another doctor wrote, "It is absolutely neat and clear. The paper has been leaked, there has been fraud. Injustice has been done to the children."
The issue was also addressed by Health Activist Dr. Vivek Pandey. He wrote in an X post, "NEET 2024 Scam 🚨 Center code remains the same for the students from serial numbers 62 to 69. Do all toppers go to the same center to take the exam ? Daal me kuch kala nh puri daal hi kali hai ?"
"If despite so many evidences including FIR related to NEET UG leak in Patna , proofs of results showing irregularities and similar sequence of results topping exam the National testing agency @NTA_Exams and @PMOIndia doesn’t take any any action then millions of students will lose trust from this education system forever !!" wrote Dr. Dhruv Chauhan, a Health Activist and National Council Coordinator of IMA-JDN.

NEET Paper Leak Scam:
This year's NEET UG 2024 exam was mired in controversies after a paper leak scam was revealed in Bihar. Around 13 people, including four examinees and their family members were arrested in Bihar for their alleged involvement in the paper leak of NEET-UG exam. Patna police sources had previously claimed that the NEET-UG question papers along with their answers were provided to around 20 aspirants a day before the date of the exam i.e. May 5, 2024.
Then, the Economic Offences Unit (EOU) of Bihar Police, which took over the investigation, revealed that the brokers involved in the NEET paper leak scam took between Rs 30 lakh to Rs 50 lakh from each of the medical aspirants in exchange of giving them the question paper of the NEET UG 2024 question paper ahead of the examination.
A PIL had also been filed before the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the exam results. While the Apex Court refused to grant a stay on the exam results, it agreed to consider the matter and issue notice on the PIL seeking re-conduction of the NEET UG exams in light of the alleged malpractices and paper leak scam.
