JIPMER invites applications for PhD programmes February 2026 session, check complete details here

JIPMER Invites Applications for NET PhD Admission February 2026 Session

Puducherry: The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), an Institution of National Importance under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, has released its PhD Prospectus for the February 2026 session, inviting applications from eligible NET-qualified candidates for full-time doctoral programmes.

As detailed in the prospectus, JIPMER will conduct admissions for its NET PhD programme for February 2026, with the admission cycle set to be repeated every four months during the calendar year.

Important Dates

1 Start Date for receipt of Applications 25-02-2026
2 Last Date for receipt of soft copy of Applications through e-mail 10/3/2026
3 Last Date for receipt of Hard copy of Applications 15-03-2026
4 Publishing of eligible candidates list 25-03-2026
5 Interview dates Will be intimated later
6 Declaration of final results and despatch of admission orders (tentative) 30-04-2026

This admission cycle will be repeated every 4 months in a calendar year (February-March, 2026; June- July, 2026; October-November, 2026). The relevant dates will be announced through the JIPMER website at the commencement of each cycle.

Eligibility for Full-Time PhD

1. A candidate seeking admission to the course of study leading to the award of PhD degree must possess any one of the following qualifications:

a. Medical qualification: MBBS /MD/MS/DM/MCh from a recognized medical college or Diplomate of National Board of Examination (DNB/DrNB) in the particular subject as per the requirement of the project. The degree(s) should be registered with the MCI.

b. Non-Medical Qualification: Master’s Degree (2/3-year course) from a UGC- recognized Indian University or equivalent in the subject as per the requirements of the project.

c. Nursing Qualification: M.Sc. degree in a nursing specialty (for College of Nursing). The degree(s) should have been registered with the INC.

2. Candidates should have at least 50% aggregate marks in the qualifying examination.

3. Candidates with Master’s Degree through a distance-learning mode are NOT ELIGIBLE

Application process and Selection of Candidates

All candidates should apply in the prescribed format enclosed. Each candidate can choose up to a maximum of 3 topics of their interest from the table provided above. The degree requirements for each subject/department are given in the table above. All eligible shortlisted candidates will be called to appear for a viva voce examination (online/offline) conducted by the PhD Admission Committee. The short-listed candidates will be given a chance to go through the concept proposals of projects they are interested in and contact the guides for seeking clarification, if needed.

Rank list will be drawn based on the performance in the viva voce examination. Those who score >50% marks in the exam will be selected and will be allotted topics keeping in mind, their choices in the order of their rank from within the subjects/departments they had opted for.

At the time of joining or during the PhD course period, the candidates should not be pursuing full- time or part-time course or holding any regular or contract job. Candidates working in a Government (Union/State/Autonomous) organization, if selected, should submit “No Objection Certificate” at the time of admission.

Applications of candidates who fail to fulfill the prescribed eligibility criteria will be rejected.

NOTE:

1. Any attempt on the part of the candidate to influence directly or indirectly the admission procedures will be viewed seriously and lead to disqualification of the application.

2. Every effort is made by JIPMER to communicate in time to the candidate regarding the examination, merit rank, counseling, etc. through website. In case the candidate does not notice the information, JIPMER shall not be held responsible for the same.

3. In the matter of selection/admission, the decision of the Director of JIPMER will be final.

4. All students admitted to the Course at JIPMER shall maintain good conduct, pay the requisite tuition fees and other charges by due dates, attend their classes/clinics regularly and abide by rules and regulations of the Institute. When the conduct and character of a student is not satisfactory or of suspicious nature, the Director reserves the right to make him/her vacate the hostel or to expel him/her from the Institute after due payment for damages caused by him/her.

Accommodation

In-campus accommodation facilities are limited, and there is no guarantee that PhD scholars will be provided accommodation. They will have to make their own arrangements to get a suitable accommodation outside the campus.

4. Room Rent (including Electricity charges) @500/- per month (for double accommodation). Single accommodation for the first-year students is subjectto availability and if available, the student has to pay @ 750/- per month accordingly. 6,000 or 6,000

B. For subsequent years (Double or Triple sharing – Sharing Accommodation)
o Establishment charges (per annum) (Non-refundable) 6,000
o Room Rent (incl. electricity charges) @ Rs.500/- per month 6,000

C. For subsequent years (Single rooms)
1. Establishment charges (per annum) (Non-refundable) 6,000
2. Room Rent (inclusive of electricity charges) @ Rs.750/- per month 6,000
Total amount to be paid (per annum) 15,000

*The caution and mess deposits will be refunded at the time of vacating the hostel room, after deductions, if any.

Note: For the subsequent years, on completion of every year, Hostel fee payment is to be paid by the students as per JIPMER Hostel Manual.

Duration of the PhD Course

The candidates registered for PhD as full-time research scholars shall conduct research work for a minimum period of three (3) years from the date of provisional registration.

He/she shall attend the department for research on all working days, except for periods when he/she is allowed to visit other institutions/laboratories for activities connected with research for a period permitted by the concerned guide and competent authorities.

Maximum duration

The duration of the course and certification of research experience will be the time period from provisional registration to submission of the thesis. The maximum period of the course shall not exceed five years for full time candidates and six years for part-time candidates from the date of provisional registration. During this period, it is mandatory for the candidate to work in the department.

Extension beyond six years can only be granted by the competent authority, and only under extraordinary circumstances. The decision of the PhD Research Monitoring Committee (PhD RMC) will be final in this regard and the registration of candidates who are unable to complete their course within the above-stipulated period shall stand cancelled automatically. Such scholars shall no longer be eligible for any PhD in this Institute.

Leave and other rules

1. Only 30 days’ leave is permitted each year.

2. Two conference leaves, not exceeding a total of ten (10) days, will be permitted in a year. The leave will be sanctioned if the scholar presents a paper from her/his thesis work.

3. If they wish to attend any other conference, they will have to avail leave from their sanctioned 30 days. Leave for undergoing training and attending workshops will be considered as given below (point 5).

4. The women candidates shall be entitled for maternity leave for 135 days (4.5 months) only as per existing rules.

5. In case the guide recommends a candidate for specific training or project related work outside JIPMER (within India or abroad), the leave shall be treated as on duty/study leave without any financial implications for JIPMER in this regard. This study leave shall not be for more than 6 months in the entire registration period. The proof of acceptance of the candidate for such training/work outside should be submitted and on return, the report of such training/work done shall be required to be submitted to the Dean (R), by the candidate through the guide.

Break of Study

PhD is a continuous program, and hence a break of study cannot be granted under any circumstances, including medical grounds. Students can leave the course mid-way only by discontinuing the course and their names will be removed from the rolls of this institute. No correspondence in this regard will be entertained.

Penalty for Discontinuation of PhD

In the event a student discontinues the course for any reason within 12 months, he/she will be levied a fine of Rs. 25,000/-; between 12 to 24 months, he/she has to pay Rs. 50,000/- and between 24-36 months, the student has to pay Rs. 75,000/-.

Any category/situation that is not covered by the above or the PhD guidelines will be referred to the Dean (Research) and the Director. The Director's decision will be final in such matters.

Conversion of PhD course from full-time to part-time and vice-versa will not be allowed under normal circumstances.
