Madras HC Orders Interim Stay on NEET 2025 Results Declaration

Chennai: Even though the Madhya Pradesh High Court recently gave clearance to the National Testing Agency (NTA) to release the results for the National Eligibility-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2025 examination for all but 11 centres, the Madras High Court has now issued an interim stay in this regard.

After hearing the plea of several students who were affected due to a power cut at an examination centre based in Chennai, the Madras HC bench comprising Justice V Lakshminarayanan granted an interim stay restraining the authorities from releasing the NEET UG 2025 results. The matter has now been scheduled for further hearing on June 02, 2025.

According to the students, due to storm and heavy rainfall, there had been a power outage at PM Shri Kendriya Vidyalaya CRPF-Avadi, Chennai, which was their examination centre, from approximately 3.00 PM to 4.15 PM on the day of the exam i.e. May 4, 2025.

In their affidavit submitted before the HC, 13 petitioner students claimed that there were no backup facilities such as generators or inverters. They submitted, "We were forced to write the examination under poor lighting conditions, and rainwater entered the examination hall, causing further disruption as we were asked to move from the assigned seats."

Allegedly, despite the disruption, the examination authorities did not provide them with any extra time and due to this, the petitioners could not fully complete the examination, PTI has reported.

As per the latest media report by Live Law, the students argued that their reasonable expectations were hurt and they were deprived when compared to students from other examination centers. They had also sent a letter in this regard to NTA through email informing about the issue and demanding a re-examination for the affected students.

The petitioners argued that they were subjected to grossly unequal examination conditions compared at other centres, violating Article 14 of the Constitution. Also, rights under Article 21 (Protection of life, liberty) had also been infringed.

"A national-level competitive exam like NEET must ensure a level playing field, which was denied to the petitioners," mentioned the plea.

Meanwhile, despite timely representation on May 4 itself, and follow-up efforts, the respondent authorities- including the Union Government, National Medical Commission, and the National Testing Agency (NTA) have not acknowledged or addressed the genuine grievances of the petitioners.

Medical Dialogues had reported that recently, the Madhya Pradesh HC stayed the publication of the National Eligibility-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG) exam results at 11 centres in Indore, which had faced a power outage during the UG medical entrance test held on May 4, 2025.
