Mumbai: In a major relief to the medical aspirants in Pune, Maharashtra Common Entrance Test Cell has allowed students to add Pune based Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College and Teaching Hospital to their preference list for MBBS admission.

With this, 100 MBBS seats at this medical college, which is run by the Pune Muncipal Corporation Medical Education Trust, has been made open for admission for this academic year.

This comes after a Government Resolution (GR) was issued by Maharashtra Medical Edication Department on March 16.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that in August 2019, the PMC standing committee had given the approval to form a trust to run the medical college at Rs 622 crore. It was decided that the medical college would be constituted on a 10-acre plot and it would be named after late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The apex medical body National Medical Commission (NMC) was supposed to visit the medical college in April 2021 in order to ensure that the college has proper medical infrastructure. However, due to the pandemic, the process of sending proposals got delayed ultimately delaying the NMC visit.

Finally, the college earned NMC nod for 100 MBBS seats last year after the PMC standing committee, PMC general body and the urban development ministry gave clearance for the medical college.

Recently the State Medical Education Department issued a GR on March 16 stating that the Pune based medical college was allowed 100 seats for first-year MBBS admission. This was followed by a notice by the Maha CET cell allowing the students to add this medical college to their preference list.

"Admission process of NEET-UG-2021 (MBBS/BDS) courses has started and second round of admission was completed on 14/03/2022. Preferences for Bharatratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College, and Teaching Hospital, Pune (College code 1157) was not included during the preference filling process conducted between 21/01/2022 to 28/01/2022.

All the desirous candidates who have filled the preferences for Medical and Dental colleges are hereby informed that he/she can add (insert) the preference for Bharatratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College, and Teaching Hospital, Pune (College code 1157) in the preferences already filled, using his/her login ID and password, on the web site www.mahacet.org. The code should be inserted anywhere above the allotted preference of 2nd CAP round as per choice. Candidates who were not allotted any seat in 1st CAP can insert the choice anywhere," Maha CET cell mentioned in the notice.
Referring to the GR, the notice added, "As per Government Resolution (Ref -2), this Institute is permanent non- granted Institute. Hence there will be State Quota seats and Institutional (Management/NRI) quota seats. While filling the preference, candidate can opt for either State quota seat or Institutional (Management/NRI) quota seat. Accordingly, candidate will have to choose suffix after college code. Candidates are advised to go through the fee structure before opting for State quota seat or Institutional (Management/NRI) quota seat. Candidate can opt for both State quota seat and Institutional (Management/NRI) quota seat."
"As per the State Government Resolution dated 16/03/2022 (Ref No. 2), this Institute is permanent non-granted Institute. Hence fee of this Institute is governed by Maharashtra Educational Institutions (Prohibition of Capitation fee) Act 1987. Fee for this Institute will be regulated by The Fees Regulatory Authority, Maharashtra State. All the relevant fee(s) are available on the website of Bharatratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College, and Teaching Hospital, Pune. (www.pmc.gov.in)" it added.
Allowing the candidates who have already been admitted with a choice, the notice further mentioned, "If a candidate has joined allotted college during first round and filled status retention form, such a candidate should cancel his/her Status retention online, before adding/inserting the code of BABVMC, Pune. However, if code is not inserted/added cancellation of Status Retention will not be accepted. All such candidates will be considered for BABVMC, Pune only. Seat allotment to Bharatratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College, and Teaching Hospital, Pune will be done only after all the relevant permission/ affiliation are received from concern authorities," read the notice.
"This facility will be available from 19/03/2022 to 22/03/2022 upto 08.00 pm server time. All the other preferences filled by the candidate will remain unchanged. If a candidate do not wish to add this preference, his/her previously filled preferences will remain unchanged. These preferences will be used for next and subsequent rounds of admission for Medical and Dental courses," the notice clarified.

With this nod from the State, now the total MBBS seat count in Maharashtra has reached to 9,000. However, students have responded to this news with mixed responses as the college is relatively new.

While commenting on the matter, one of the parents of the medical aspirants told Indian Express, "This college will have an institutional quota, as opposed to other government colleges where the fees will be higher. But for regular seats under the open category, the fee of Rs 7 lakh is definitely better when compared to other private or deemed university medical colleges."

Meanwhile, another parent activist has opined,"It's a welcome addition to bring the cutoff lower. But it's a new college with classrooms not developed yet and will be operational initially from a temporary place."
