Maharashtra applies to NMC for 1,489 new PG medical seats in 34 govt institutes
Nagpur: The Maharashtra Government has applied to the National Medical Commission (NMC) for approval of 1,489 postgraduate medical seats across 34 government medical colleges for the 2026-27 academic session.
Replying to a starred question raised by MLA Nitin Raut, who sought to know about the beginning of the admission process for the increased PG seats at state government medical colleges, Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif informed the State Legislative Assembly recently that the applications have been submitted through the respective deans of the government medical colleges. However, he did not specify how many of these seats have been approved by the NMC so far.
According to the minister, the state government had issued requirement certificates for 1,621 PG degree seats at the 34 government medical colleges. Out of these, applications seeking approval for 1,489 seats were submitted to the NMC.

The proposal includes medical colleges like Indira Gandhi Government Medical College in Nagpur and government medical colleges in Gondia, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli.
Mushrif informed the Assembly, as reported by TOI, that the NMC had invited applications for starting new PG courses and increasing the intake in existing courses for the 2026-27 academic year. The Commission had initially fixed the application period from March 2 to March 31, which was later extended till April 20. The state submitted the applications within the prescribed timeline.
Due to the regulatory changes in the Post Graduate Medical Minimum Standard Requirements, 2023, the NMC extended the last date for submission of applications for Broad Speciality and Super Speciality courses for starting new postgraduate medical courses, establishing new PG medical institutes (standalone PG institutes), and increasing seats in existing PG courses for the academic year 2026-27.
In a March 26, 2026, notice, the President of the Medical Assessment & Rating Board (MARB) of NMC notified that the deadline extension, which was earlier fixed as March 31, 2026, was extended till April 20, 2026 (11:59 PM), giving additional time to medical institutions to comply with the revised norms.
To pay the NMC's application fees, the colleges were to draw on their revolving fund accounts, and where these fell short, a special provision allowed borrowing from other colleges' funds. An order for 33.11 crore in fees for 1,272 seats was issued on March 24.
On faculty, the minister said sanctioned regular teaching posts at the colleges were being filled on priority, with contract and visiting faculty engaged until then.
