Chennai: Students opting for MD/MS courses under the NRI Quota at the Tamil Nadu private medical colleges will have to spend as high as Rs 90-91 lakh approximately, as per the revised fee structure for clinical and non-clinical programmes.

Recently, the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Medical Education and Research selection committee announced a revised fee structure for clinical and non-clinical programmes at 26 private and self-financing medical colleges.

It revealed that the total expenditure to pursue MD or MS degree courses under the NRI quota is likely to reach Rs 90-91 lakh at 10 such colleges if hostel and living expenses are added.

The DMER released the postgraduate fee and stipend details for the academic year 2025-2026 as per mandatory pre-counselling fee disclosure by self-financing medical institutes as directed by the Supreme Court.

Referring to the Supreme Court's order and also Section 5.3 of PGMER 2023, which states that PG medicos in a particular State/UT shall be paid a uniform stipend, the DMER mentioned, "The fee details & stipend has been displayed as per the communication received from the college. The concerned institutions have been instructed to display the fee details and stipend details in their official website and strictly adhere to the norms as prescribed by NMC in disclosing fee & stipend details."

It also clarified that the tuition fees and development fees have been fixed by the Fee Fixation Committee, while hostel fees, mess fees, transportation fees, and other fees are as prescribed by the concerned institutes.

The revised fee structure revealed that the MD MS course fees under the NRI quota at private medical colleges, including Madha Medical College, Velammal Medical College, Tagore Medical College, Sri Muthukumaran Medical College, KMCH Institute of Medical College, Karpaga Vinayaga Institute of Medical Sciences Swamy Vivekananda Medical College, St Peter’s Medical College, PSP Medical College, and Indira Medical College can cost as high as Rs 90-91 lakh.

For instance, Madha Medical College, Velammal Medical College, Tagore Medical College, Sri Muthukumaran Medical College, KMCH Institute of Medical College, and Karpaga Vinayaga Institute of Medical Sciences have fixed their tuition fees at Rs 29 lakh per annum for clinical MD, MS courses and Rs 19 lakh per annum for non-clinical courses.

Therefore, for the clinical subjects, the total tuition fee cost will be Rs 87 to Rs 88 lakh for three years. This amount excludes development fees and other mandatory charges.

Since 10 such private medical colleges are charging Rs 29 lakh per annum for clinical courses under NRI quota, after considering the development charges and other mandatory fees, the total amount of course fee will rise to around Rs 90 to Rs 91 lakh.

Meanwhile, the Government medical colleges are charging Rs 50,000 per annum for PG Degree and Rs 20,000 for PG Diploma courses and the Government quota fees in self-financing medical colleges range between Rs 3 and Rs 3.5 lakh per annum.

The detailed fee structure and stipend details, as disclosed by DMER, are as follows:
