New Delhi: The pending legal issue concerning the National Eligibility Entrance Test Super Speciality (NEET SS) 2025 examination is scheduled to be heard by the Supreme Court on May 25, as the superspeciality aspirants are waiting for the Round 2 Counselling.

Even though the matter was earlier scheduled for July, it has now been listed by the Apex Court for May 25, 2026. Meanwhile, the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) is pursuing the matter to expedite the counselling process.

Commenting on this, Dr Meet Ghonia, the General Secretary of FORDA, told Medical Dialogues, "It's in consideration with DGHS. We are following up the matter."

Last month, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) extended the choice filling process for Round 2 of NEET SS Counselling 2025 until further orders, citing an ongoing legal matter in the Supreme Court of India.

MCC took this decision in light of the case Tamilvani & Ors. vs State of Tamil Nadu, which concerns the reversion of in-service seats from Tamil Nadu to the All India Quota pool, prompting authorities to delay the counselling schedule.

"It is for the information to all candidates participating in Round-2 of SS Counselling 2025 that the Choice Filling for Round 2 of NEET SS Counselling 2025 has been extended till further orders due to pending decision in the matter of Tamilvani & Ors. vs State of Tamil Nadu (W.P No. 415 of 2026) in the Hon’ble Supreme Court regarding reversion of in-service seats of Tamil Nadu to All India Quota pool. Candidates are advised to stay in touch with MCC website for further updates regarding schedule of NEET SS Counselling 2025," the notice read.

As a result, the counselling process for superspeciality medical admissions has come to a standstill. Earlier, the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) had written to the MCC to expedite the counselling process, highlighting how the delay is causing immense distress, unemployment, and financial hardship for the aspirants. It pointed out that while the first round of counselling has been completed, the second round is facing repeated postponements due to ongoing legal proceedings in the Hon'ble Supreme Court.

The association had requested MCC to explore the possibility of proceeding with subsequent rounds of counselling in parallel with the legal process, if permissible. In this regard, FAIMA had urged the Committee to seek urgent clarification or direction from appropriate authorities to avoid further delays, provide a clear and transparent timeline to candidates to reduce uncertainty and anxiety, and make necessary representations before the concerned authorities, including legal forums if required, to prioritize early resolution of the matter.

Speaking to Medical Dialogues, Dr. Lakshya Kumar Jha, National Vice President of FAIMA, said, "FAIMA had consistently urged for an expedited hearing because prolonged delay in NEET-SS counselling was creating severe distress among aspirants and affecting healthcare manpower across institutions."

"We welcome the reported preponement of the matter to 25 May and hope for an early resolution so that counselling and admissions can proceed without further disruption," he added.

Addressing the issue of NEET SS 2025 Counselling, the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) wrote in an X post, "The matter is listed for hearing in the Hon’ble Supreme Court on 25th May. The ongoing administrative changes in Tamil Nadu (post elections) have also contributed to delays in coordination and processing at the state level."

"The Union Health Ministry remains in active coordination with the State Government to expedite the process. We are actively pursuing the matter and will continue to keep everyone updated," it added.
