NMC to increase MBBS seats, NEET 2025 Round 2 counselling tentatively from August 29: MCC

New Delhi- Through a notice, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has informed that, as per the information received from the National Medical Commission (NMC), the process of increasing MBBS seats for the academic session 2025 is in progress. Therefore, on this, MCC has extended the National Eligibility and Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET UG) Round 2 Counselling dates for the academic year 2025.
According to the notice, to include newly authorised MBBS seats in the NEET UG Round 2 Counselling for the academic year 2025, the competent authority has decided to start Round 2 of UG Counselling 2025 from 29th August 2025, tentatively. However, the revised schedule for Round 2 will be published shortly.
Meanwhile, the counselling for the NEET UG is already underway, and the first round has been completed. However, the second round of counselling was expected to start by August 25, 2025.
On this, Medical Dialogues has earlier reported that India is likely to see an addition of around 8000 MBBS and PG medical seats this academic year, NMC chief Dr Abhijat Sheth said, with inspections of medical colleges currently underway. Seat approvals had slowed earlier after a CBI probe into corruption at NMC and the Health Ministry led to the process being put on hold. Dr Sheth clarified that while some UG seats may have temporarily reduced, overall numbers will rise once assessments conclude.
Presently, there are 1,18,098 UG seats with 59,782 in government and 58,316 in private. The number of PG seats is 53,960, with 30,029 in government and 23,931 in private. "We expect an increase of roughly around 8,000 seats (UG and PG seats combined) based on the number of applications we have received in this academic year," Dr Sheth said.
