Sports Quota for MBBS Admissions Withdrawn or Lapsed? Telangana HC Asks State
Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court has sought clarification from the State Government regarding whether the 0.5 percent quota for games and sports in admission to medical courses has been withdrawn or has lapsed.
The High Court bench took note of the matter after a medical aspirant, Miryala Arjun, filed a plea in this regard. He approached the HC bench after the Youth Advancement, Tourism & Culture (Sports) Department took no action into the petitioner's application seeking sports quota reservation for MBBS admission.
Filing the plea, the petitioner urged the court to issue an appropriate order or direction declaring the inaction of the State Government authorities in extending the reservation to him under Sports Quota for taking admission into MBBS course as per G O dated 05.07.2017, in spite of a written representation, as illegal, arbitrary, unconstitutional, improper, and against the principles of natural justice.
Further, the petitioner sought direction to Kaloji Narayana University of Health Sciences to extend the reservation under the Sports Quota for admission into the MBBS course as per the Government Order.
During the hearing of the case on Monday, the HC bench comprising Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice G M Mohiuddin directed the counsel for the Telangana Government, Sri T.Ramesh, to seek instructions "as to whether G.O.Ms.No.114, dated 05.07.2017, whereunder ½% (0.5%) quota has been provided for Games and Sports for admission to medical courses, has been withdrawn or has it been lapsed for efflux of time."
The matter has been listed for a further hearing on 04.09.2025.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that back in 2018, the Telangana High Court had directed the State Government not to admit anyone into medical courses under the sports quota for that academic year.
Taken aback at odd names like, sepak takraw, modern pentathlon, lawn bowls and wushu, which were part of the eligible sport category for course admissions, Justices Kongara Vijaya Lakshmi and V Ramasubramanian had said that it was better to not have sports quota for admission, than have fictitious sportsmen seeking admissions into medical courses, without having participated in any sports competition.
