12 PG doctors accuse Kozhikode Medical College faculty of harassment, DME orders probe

Kozhikode: As many as 12 postgraduate doctors from the Department of Psychiatry at Kozhikode Medical College have accused two faculty members of mental harassment, prompting the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) to set up a three-member inquiry committee.
The three-member panel includes two doctors from Government Medical College, Thrissur, and one from Government Medical College, Kottayam. The committee has been asked to submit its report within a week.
Submitting a complaint to the principal of the medical college, the doctors claimed that the two faculty members humiliated them even in front of patients and medical and non-medical staff. Due to the humiliation, the doctors were under tremendous stress, which was affecting their personal and professional lives as well.
Apart from this, the doctors alleged that the accused faculty members often threatened to fail them in exams. However, the doctors claimed that the administration took no action in this regard.
Meanwhile, the university students’ union at the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) has sought an independent investigation into the allegations, reports The Hindu.
In a letter to the Principal, K.P. Sidharth, chairperson of the students’ union, pointed out that the reports of harassment raised significant ethical and institutional concerns that warranted immediate attention. The union functionaries also said that action should be taken against the faculty members as per university rules and National Medical Commission guidelines.
The issue has also drawn protests, with the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) organising a march seeking strict action against the accused faculty members. The Kerala Medical Post Graduate Association and the university students’ union have also extended support to the complainants and demanded justice.
The SFI leaders also claimed that this was not the first such instance of harassment being reported from the college. A similar complaint had been raised against one of the above-mentioned faculty members in 2025 January, but action was not taken, they said.
