9 GMCs to become functional from next academic year 2024, says Maha Medical Education Minister
Nagpur: The proposal of establishing nine new Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) in each district which was approved by the state cabinet in June this year is expected to become operational with students from the next academic year 2024.
The new medical colleges will provide opportunities to aspiring medical professionals and improve healthcare services in the state. Hence, the assurance from Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif about operationalizing these colleges and admitting students in the upcoming academic year 2024 is a positive step toward achieving these goals.
During a visit to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Nagpur on Tuesday, the minister confirmed that medical aspirants will be able to get admission to these medical colleges in the upcoming year. The minister engaged in various review meetings focused on the establishment of new medical colleges in the state.

Medical Dialogues team had previously reported that the Maharashtra Cabinet approved 9 new government medical colleges with 100 MBBS seats each. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde presided over the meeting which was attended by Dy Chief minister and all cabinet ministers.
The Maharashtra Cabinet approved Rs 4365.72 crores to start new government medical colleges and 430-bed hospitals in nine districts across the state.
These districts are Palghar, Thane (Ambernath), Jalna, Amravati, Buldhana, Washim, Wardha, Bhandara and Gadchiroli where new medical colleges will start with an intake capacity of 100 students each college.
At present there are 23 government medical colleges and their admission capacity is 3,750 students.
Speaking to TOI, the minister said “These colleges are slated to admit students in the upcoming academic year, reinforcing the state’s dedication to enhancing medical education and healthcare infrastructure."
The healthcare facilities will witness an expansion with the establishment of these nine medical colleges in every district of the state, thereby creating additional opportunities for doctors and medical students.
