Academic Stress? BJ Medical College 3rd year MBBS Kills Self Four Days Before Exam
Ahmedabad: Another case of medical student suicide has been reported in Gujarat, where a third-year MBBS student at BJ Medical College on the Civil Hospital campus in Asarwa committed suicide by hanging himself in the hostel room on Monday.
The medico killed himself four days before the commencement of his university examination. Police officials have informed TOI that academic stress is believed to be the cause behind the suicide.
Previously, the 21-year-old medico, who lived in the boys' hostel on the campus, had reportedly attempted suicide twice by hanging and ingesting sedatives, BJ Medical College sources informed the Daily. A case of accidental death has been registered in this connection by Meghaninagar police.
Sources in the college informed that the medico and his friends got together on Sunday for a group study session and studied till late evening. Requesting anonymity, a student told TOI, "On Sunday, around midnight, my friends and I returned to our rooms. When I woke up on Monday morning, I learned that he had hanged himself."
Commenting on the matter, Inspector Y J Rathod of Meghaninagar police told the Times of India, "Ghadia had been suffering from severe mental stress and had conveyed the same to his mother and hostel mates. He succumbed to the stress and hanged himself from the ceiling fan in his hostel room on Monday." Another source informed the Daily that the late medico had been suffering from depression and had even consulted a psychiatrist in the college. A senior faculty member said, "He was advised hospitalization, but he refused to heed to it."
The medico had reportedly sent a message to his friend saying that he had attempted suicide twice before, but he was rescued in time. He also urged his friend to save him from death this time. However, his friend was allegedly asleep when the medico sent the message, sources in the college informed TOI. The message allegedly further mentioned that he wanted his body to be handed over to his mother.
Meanwhile, confirming that the late medico had a history of stress and psychiatric ailment, the Dean of BJ Medical College, Dr. Hansa Goswami informed the Daily that the late medico had a history of stress and psychiatric ailment.
Speaking about the matter, a source in Meghaninagar police informed, "Ghadia had studied in the Gujarati medium and when he enrolled in MBBS, he struggled to understand medical terms in English. Due to this, he was under severe stress."
