Battling depression, academic stress, AIIMS Bhopal MBBS student allegedly commits suicide by slitting his throat

Pune: In a tragic incident, a medical student from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhopal, was discovered lying in a pool of blood in the hostel washroom on the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) campus in Wanowrie. The student is reported to have committed suicide, allegedly slitting his throat with a knife that he purchased online.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the student had been battling depression and academic stress and had been receiving treatment for these issues for over a year. However, unable to cope any longer, he allegedly took his life.

Before taking the extreme step, the student reportedly left behind a suicide note in which he appealed to the Education Minister to replace Mughal history in the curriculum with the biography of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He reportedly sent his suicide note to his parents via social media and also posted it on WhatsApp.
As per Pune Times Mirror news report, the note mentioned, “I, ***, am a student at AIIMS Bhopal. Due to academic stress and depression, I am taking my own life. I request the Education Minister to remove Mughal, French, and Russian history from the curriculum and instead include biographies of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Maharana Pratap.”
The incident took place on the Armed Forces Medical College campus in Wanowrie, where the student had gone on May 8 to take part in an intercollegiate sports competition. In the early hours of Monday, he reportedly went to the hostel washroom and ended his life by slitting his throat.
When fellow hostellers discovered him, they immediately alerted the police. Upon arrival, authorities found him lying in a pool of blood in the bathroom around 10:15 am. Medical experts from AFMC were called in, but he had already succumbed to his injuries before any treatment could be given.
As per the police, the deceased had scored 710 out of 720 in the NEET exam. His father is a practising doctor, and his brother is also pursuing medical studies, reports HT.
During the investigation, the police questioned his classmates, who stated that he had been experiencing severe stress and undergoing treatment for the past year.
Senior police inspector Satyajit Admane told the Indian Express, “He was found unconscious, sitting on a commode in the bathroom of AFMC boys’ hostel, with blood all around. Doctors at AFMC checked him and pronounced him dead. A knife and some of his belongings were found at the spot.”
A case has been registered in this regard, and an investigation is underway.
