Bijapur: A ragging incident has recently been reported from Bijapur wherein a second-year MBBS student from Anantnag, Kashmir, was subjected to brutal ragging and physical assault at Al-Ameen Medical College by seniors from the 2019 batch after a confrontation over a cricket match.

Describing the student's ordeal, the Jammu Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) who highlighted the issue by calling it a ‘deeply disturbing incident’ explained that the student was enduring the ragging for months. He was allegedly brutally beaten, humiliated, issued death threats, forced to apologise and issued warnings by his seniors.

“You have four more years here. We are locals—imagine how terrible we can make your life.” the seniors were quoted saying as per the recent media reports.

As per Free Press Kashmir news report, the ragging began after the student on Tuesday at around 4 PM was watching a cricket match between the 2019 and 2022 batches by standing near the boundary line of the college playground. A senior reportedly ordered him to stay outside, and though he complied, the situation turned serious when he was later asked to leave the area entirely. The student who is the captain of the 2023 batch cricket team, refused. This led to an altercation with senior students, who accused him of being disrespectful and defiant.

Following the altercation, the seniors allegedly called him and forced him to sing the "Al-Ameen salute” and dance to it for their entertainment. It is reported that they even tried to force him to get into their car, in an attempt to harm him further. When he refused, asserting that such demands were both inappropriate and against college regulations, the situation became more volatile.

On that day in the evening, a group of seniors allegedly stormed into his hostel room and brutally assaulted him. They repeatedly beat him, forced him to record a video apologising under duress, and issued chilling threats, warning that his next four years at the institution would be made unbearable.

National Convenor of the Association, Nasir Khuehami, who spoke to the medico, said that "As the captain of the 2023 batch cricket team, Hamim found himself at the centre of a power struggle with senior students. When he attempted to stay near the field, the seniors ordered him to leave, claiming that the match was exclusively for the 2019-2022 batches. When he refused, insisting that he had every right to be there, he was confronted by seniors who demanded an explanation for his ‘defiance.’"

Condemning the incident, the association sought Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramana’s intervention to ensure strict action against the perpetrators and to safeguard the rights and safety of students, especially non-locals, in educational institutions. It also demanded expulsion of those found guilty from the college.

“Such incidents highlight the alarming culture of unchecked ragging and abuse within educational institutions. This is not just an isolated case of violence—it is a failure of the system meant to protect students. Immediate legal action must be taken against the perpetrators, and both college authorities and law enforcement must intervene swiftly. Stronger anti-ragging measures need to be implemented to ensure the safety and dignity of all students, especially non-locals and Kashmiri students, who often face additional discrimination," it added as reported by Careers 360.

Ragging incidents among students have become a growing concern, escalating rapidly and taking on increasingly cruel forms. Medical Dialogues recently reported about a horrifying and brutal ragging incident in Kerala where five third-year nursing students were arrested for allegedly ragging first-year students at the Government Nursing College.

It was alleged by the 1st year students who were subjected to ragging that they were allegedly forced to strip naked, dumbbells hung from private parts, stabbed with geometry box compasses and beaten bloody for three months. Following this, the five accused students were suspended along with the principal and an assistant professor for allegedly failing to check ragging and effectively intervene in the matter.
