Centre Actively Considering Proposal for New Medical College in Karaikal: Union Minister

Karaikal- Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare and Minister of State in the Ministry of AYUSH, Prataprao Jadhav, informed that the proposal of the regional administration to set up a medical college in Karaikal, Puducherry, is under active consideration of the central government.
As per the Hindu report, the minister said that the regional administration has sought permission to start a medical college in Karaikal under the Centre's 'one district, one medical college' initiative. "It is under active consideration of the health ministry. We are examining the proposal," he said.
Along with this, he also promised that all possible assistance will be provided for the development of Puducherry and JIPMER as the future requirements of the institute will be met through allocation of funds, reports The Hindu
Meanwhile, JIPMER Director Veer Singh Negi informed that the institute's 476-bed hospital will be built in Karaikal. This hospital will be ready by June 2027. The director also informed that the upgradation and modernisation of the regional cancer center will be completed soon and a 150-bed critical care block will start functioning by next year.
The trauma care unit has been renovated at a cost of ₹4.74 crore and is now designated as a Level 1 trauma centre, with the facility to handle 350 to 400 emergency cases per day. The upgrade includes a new covered bay for ambulances, resuscitation area, fire safety infrastructure and expansion of the triage area.
Medical Dialogues recently reported that the Union Minister is all set to integrate allopathic and Ayurvedic medicine under one academic roof with plans to launch India's first MBBS-BAMS course at the JIPMER in Puducherry. Announcing the plan recently, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare and AYUSH (Independent Charge), Prataprao Jadhav, said that the course is at the conceptual stage, with a new syllabus in development.
