DME Signals Capacity Boost: Karnataka GMCs Can Add 1,513 MBBS, PG Medical Seats

Karnataka- Following the implementation plan for enhancing medical education in Karnataka, recently, the state government informed that there is a potential to add 1,513 undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) medical seats in government medical colleges across Karnataka.
The Union government recently sought information about the plan to expand medical education in all the states. It said, "To implement the vision of expanding UG-PG medical seats, it is necessary to assess the existing medical facilities in terms of infrastructure and other resources... Creation of seats using the existing infrastructure will help in achieving the target in a timely and cost-effective manner."
Responding to the Union government, the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) said that the UG seats in government medical colleges in Karnataka are 3,500 (MBBS), which can be increased to 900. At the same time, the availability of PG seats in government medical colleges is 1,600, and the number likely to increase is 613, reports The Hindu.
The DME also said that a total of 267 DNB seats are available and there are 11 model maternal and child health (MCH) hospitals which are in the process of applying for fresh recognition. "Karnataka is in the process of identifying potential hospitals to start standalone PG institutes," it added.
According to The Hindu news report, the state said, "Establishment of 157 nursing colleges along with the 157 medical colleges approved under Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS) of Medical Education Division, medical colleges will also be identified to start new nursing colleges co-located with the medical colleges".
Further, the Karnataka State Allied and Healthcare Council has been constituted and will start functioning after receiving rules and guidelines from the National Commission for Allied Health Sciences.
