Gauhati Medical College Hospital Equips Itself with 42 Pediatric ICUs, Braces for Third Wave
The Gauhati Medical College and Hospital has equipped itself with 42 PICUs in anticipation of the third wave.
Guwahati: The Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has equipped itself with 42 Pediatric Intensive Care Units, in preparation for the much dreaded third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a judicious manoeuvre that aims to save as many lives as possible during the third peak, which according to experts, will affect children to a greater extent.
The newly installed general ICUs in the medical college are dual-mode that can serve as PICUs after installing software.
"The GMCH has treated 305 children during the pandemic, and 12 of them are still under treatment. Some experts say that the third wave of the Covid-19 may affect children. It is well and good if the third wave does not occur. We have 42 PICUs ready in the GMCH," the GMCH superintendent, Dr. Abhijit Sharma, said, in conversation with the Sentinel.
"The GMCH has 200 newly installed general ICUs of dual-mode in its parking areas. Installing software, we can use them for children as well. We are well-equipped. We have 300 ICUs and oxygen beds at Sarusajai. The Covid hospital at Kalapahar also has ICUs and oxygen beds," he further stated.
The recovery rate in children is encouraging and all efforts have been made by the institution to ensure that healthcare facilities are provided to as many children as possible, if required during the much dreaded third wave.
Gauhati Medical College, Guwahati was established in the year 1947 by Dr. John Berry White, MRCS, a British Surgeon of the East India Company. The institute was established through the up-gradation of Berry White Medical School at Dibrugarh in the year 1947. The institution is the first medical college in Assam. Gauhati Medical College is affiliated to Gauhati University. The institute offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses to the students in the field of medical science.
